Message of the Week
October 10, 2007
IT’S TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE HEALTH EXPO!
Friday, November 2 – Morgantown Mall – We’re kicking off Mountaineer Week with the annual Health Expo 2007 sponsored by WVUH, UHA and WVU Health Sciences. This is a great opportunity for students to practice patient skills, people skills, blood pressure screenings, work with your fellow nursing students from other classes, work beside faculty, earn community service hours and get a gold designer WVU School of Nursing t-shirt. (ok, the shirt was designed by us, but it’s still really nice!)
The Health Expo runs from 8a – 8p. Students are asked to work a minimum 4 hour shift:
8:00 AM - 12 noon
12 noon - 4 PM
4:00 PM - 8 PM (plus maybe 10-15 minutes clean-up time)
(you can work all day if you want and many students do!)
The School of Nursing provides blood pressure readings for the hundreds of people who stop by the booth during the Expo. It is not unusual for us to work with 400 – 600 visitors. We provide the blood pressures and in many cases, a sympathetic ear. For many in the community, the health fairs and expos are their only means of health care for the year. The Expo is a great community service project. You will enjoy it and you will learn. We have had students return after graduation to help because they found this a very rewarding experience.
This year we have been asked to assist with flu shots with the Cheat Lake Physicians. If you would like to help with that project, the shots are being administered from 8a – 11a and 4p – 7p. Help is needed registering people and giving the shots. Please e-mail Betty Jurick bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu to sign up for the Expo. Include your t-shirt size with your shift request. Please also let me know if you would be interested in flu shots.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING HEART WALK TEAM!
We don’t like to brag, so we will let our dean, Georgia Narsavage, do it for us! She was pleased to announce that the WVU SON team received the award for highest team in terms of donations and walkers on Saturday at the Greater Morgantown American Heart Association Walk!
Dr. Narsavage said in her e-mail to the School: “Congratulations to the WVU SON team! Roger Carpenter has done an outstanding job organizing this event and Lya Stroupe is the student captain who rallied the students for the walk and has contributed a lot of time and effort for this. She's outstanding! Congratulations to all who participated and contributed - you are making the WVU SON a major player in contributing to improving the quality of life for those with heart disease as well as supporting prevention and research.”

CELEBRATE FOUNDER'S DAY, THURS. OCT. 11TH FROM 1:30 - 3:00 PM
New Dean Georgia Narsavage will headline the Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Rho chapter Founder’s Day program. The Topic is “Your Role in Nursing’s Future” an issue of interest to us all. The program is scheduled for an afternoon with few nursing classes, so many should be able to attend—and there will be food. Cost for the program, refreshments and CEUs is $10 for members and non-members, and $5 for students. There are funds available to defer the cost for several students to attend. Please respond to Kari Sand-Jecklin at 293-1768 or ksandjecklin@hsc.wvu.edu if you’d like to attend, or to sponsor a student to attend.

We continue to raise funds for the Humane Society – I just learned that the small pc cartridges we are donating are worth around $1 and the large cartridges bring in $4 each – This continues to be a worthwhile project, saving the animals and the landfill as well. The Humane Society truly appreciates your efforts! This is a year round project!
