HOMECOMING WEEK CELEBRATING OUR NEW PRESIDENT
“Coming Home” is the theme of a week-long celebration Oct. 14-21 at West Virginia University that will culminate with the inauguration of Mike Garrison as the University’s 22nd president.
The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in historic Woodburn Circle on the Downtown Campus, with many public events planned for the days leading up to and after the ceremony. Inaugural activities will coincide with WVU Homecoming and Diversity Week.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF DR. ROBERT STITZEL
An Invitation from Dr. Fred Butcher and Dean Narsavage: Please join us for a “Celebration of Life” in memory of Dr. Robert Stitzel on Sunday, October 28 from 3- 4 pm in the WVU Health Sciences Center Auditorium. Dr. Stitzel was devoted throughout his career to West Virginia University. He was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and colleague to many of us; and even more important - he was a friend. We will celebrate his life with laughter and love, as he would have expected us to, in the presence of his family and friends. We look forward to seeing you there.
IT’S TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE HEALTH EXPO!
Friday, November 2 – Morgantown Mall – We’re kicking off Mountaineer Week with the annual Health Expo 2007 sponsored by WVUH, UHA and WVU Health Sciences. This is a great opportunity for students to practice patient skills, people skills, blood pressure screenings, work with your fellow nursing students from other classes, work beside faculty, earn community service hours and get a gold designer WVU School of Nursing t-shirt. (ok, the shirt was designed by us, but it’s still really nice!)
The Health Expo runs from 8a – 8p. Students are asked to work a minimum 4 hour shift
8-noon, or
Noon – 4p, or
4p – 8p (plus maybe 10-15 minutes clean-up time)
(you can work all day if you want and many students do!)
The School of Nursing provides blood pressure readings for the hundreds of people who stop by the booth during the Expo. It is not unusual for us to work with 400 – 600 visitors. We provide the blood pressures and in many cases, a sympathetic ear. For many in the community, the health fairs and expos are their only means of health care for the year. The Expo is a great community service project. You will enjoy it and you will learn. We have had students return after graduation to help because they found this a very rewarding experience. IN ORDER TO GET A T-SHIRT ORDERED FOR YOU, YOU NEED TO SIGN UP BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26! The community needs you.
This year we have been asked to assist with flu shots with the Cheat Lake Physicians. If you would like to help with that project, the shots are being administered from 8a – 11a and 4p – 7p. Help is needed registering people and giving the shots. Please e-mail Betty Jurick bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu to sign up for the Expo. Include your t-shirt size with your shift request. Please also let me know if you would be interested in flu shots.

THE SOPHOMORE INDUCTION CEREMONY
will be held on Friday, October 26th at 7:00 PM in the Main HSC Auditorium.
ATTENTION! SOPHOMORE & JUNIOR STUDENTS FROM KARI SAND-JECKLIN
There is a wonderful opportunity that the university offers for students, that doesn't get much publicity. The McNair Scholar program is a program that provides mentoring for underrepresented student populations to prepare students for graduate school pursuits. It is a formal summer program which pays a stipend to students for participating, and provides training in research (meets the nursing research requirement, so you don't have to take the course), preparation for grad school admission tests (GED, etc), opportunity to work with a faculty mentor, and grad school visitation trips--which I hear are quite enjoyable.
Eligibility criteria include being a first generation (of your family) to attend college and either having a low-income base or representing an underrepresented population (ethnic minority). You must also have at least a 3.0 GPA. I served as faculty mentor for a nursing student who completed the program a few years ago, and can say that she had a wonderful experience, gained a wealth of knowledge, and had a great time on the trips. If anyone is interested in learning more about the program, please contact me (Kari Sand-Jecklin) at ksandjecklin@hsc.wvu.edu or check out the McNair website at www.wvu.edu/~mcnair.
