IF FALL IS COMING, CAN SPRING REGISTRATION BE FAR BEHIND?
Spring 2009 registration begins on October 14. Students can pick up information on the Spring ON registration process in the Office of Student Services. The information will also be available online later this week. Clinical request forms will be available online beginning September 23.

GREAT COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES COMING UP IN OCTOBER

The annual community health fair, sponsored by WVU Health Sciences Center, WVUH, and UHA will be held Friday, October 17, Morgantown Mall, from 8a - 8p. Students usually work a 4-hour shift - our shifts are: 8a - Noon, Noon - 4p, 4p-8p. We are always willing to work around your schedule. This is a wonderful opportunity for nursing students to earn community service hours, perform vital services for the Morgantown community, practice patient interaction skills, and get to know other nursing students. The SON booth provides blood pressure screenings (anywhere from 600 - 800 screenings every year). We also assist the Diabetes Education booth doing finger sticks and will probably assist Cheat Lake Physicians again this year doing flu shots (over 1000 last year). Please mark your calendar for Friday, October 17 - this health expo is fun, educational and important. Email bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu to sign up.

Saturday, October 18 is the local American Heart Association Walk and the SON is a vital part of this activity. Last year, we had the most walkers, raised the most money and set the bar to a standard that will be hard to beat. In fact, the SON is probably the group who will succeed in raising that bar. This walk is fun - children and dogs are welcome - there are a lot of activities and fun for the children, pet stations (last year dogs got their own doggie bags of treats). Heart associated problems are some of the leading causes of death and illness in West Virginia. Walking and raising funds for the AHA are ways we can make a strong statement of support in fighting this deadly disease. Contact Roger Carpenter rcarpenter@hsc.wvu.edu or Betty Jurick bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu to volunteer.

THE SNA IS SELLING SON JACKETS!
Orders are due no later than Friday, September 19. You can take the money to Gail in her office (3015 HSC-N), Skills Lab, or give to Brenda Deane, Health Promotion. Checks should be made payable to WVU SNA. If you are paying cash, have exact change. Potomac State students can give their money to Kristina Butler, who has graciously agreed to be our courier (thanks, Kristina!!). Click the link for the order form and pictures of the jacket! Fall is coming - perfect time to don a School of Nursing jacket!

WVU AND MOUNTAIN LINE TRANSIT ARE WORKING TO GET YOU AROUND TOWN
Transportation Week continues this week. Throughout the week, the University's Department of Transportation and Parking will unveil WE GO!, its campaign to promote alternative forms of getting around WVU -from hoofing it and taking the bus or Personal Rapid Transit to joining a car pool or van pool. Did you know that your Mountain Line bus ticket has been paid in advance for you? Faculty, staff and students can ride the extensive, efficient Mountain Line Transit bus system free! The bus schedule services several dorms, grocery stores, malls, including the University Town Center. You have experienced driving and the hunt for parking in Morgantown and you know what it costs to fill your car. The bus is free and will pick you up anywhere along your route - you don't have to walk to designated area to catch the bus. The schedule includes trips to Fairmont, Clarksburg and the Pittsburgh Airport. Check out the possibilities - http://www.busride.org

THE 2008 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY!
WVU Basketball Coach Bob Huggins is the Campaign Chair for the 2008 WVU United Way Campaign, which kicked off Monday and will end October 31. Did you know that all funds raised remain in Monongalia and Preston Counties? Did you know that the United Way helped to provide

  • 130 emergency communications for military families
  • 19,000 nights of shelter for those experiencing homelessness
  • 6,4000 families helped with emergency financial assistance for utilities, rent and medication
  • 21,400 prescriptions for uninsured individuals
  • 500 adults with literacy tutoring
  • 315 victims of rape and/or domestic violence with childcare for their families
  • 36,150 hot meals at the Salvation Army. . . the list goes on and on - so much need - so much help is needed - we can do it again this year as we have every year.
These are people from our counties, our neighborhoods that we have helped. Please consider making a donation to the United Way this year. . . because you can!
New this year is a huge push for student involvement in the United Way campaign. Student government has numerous activities planned to bring attention to the needs and raise money.

KEEP BRINGING YOUR USED PC CARTRIDGES TO HEALTH RESTORATION
We continue to raise funds for the Humane Society – The small pc cartridges we are donating are worth around $1 and the large cartridges bring in $4 each – This continues to be a worthwhile project, saving the animals and the landfill as well. The Humane Society truly appreciates your efforts! This is a year round project! Unfortunately, the need never goes away!
