CONGRATULATIONS:

SOPHOMORE INDUCTION 9/17/04:

The Sophomore Induction ceremony will be held Friday, September 17, at 7 pm in the Health Sciences Auditorium, with a reception to follow in the lobby.  Sophomores and Junior BS/BA to BSN students should arrive in the lobby of the Health Sciences Auditorium by 6:30 pm in order to be lined up for the processional.  Please wear business professional attire.  You will be receiving a nursing pin, which will be pinned onto your jacket, shirt, or blouse.  Low cut tops and short skirts are prohibited.

DIRECT ADMIT FRESHMEN:

There will be a welcome/business meeting on October 4 at 5 pm at the Health Sciences Center in Room 3016.  We will discuss Spring 2005 scheduling, completion of pre-requisite courses, student handbook, and other items.  Pizza and beverages will be served!!!  This is a mandatory meeting.  If you have class at that time, call Lisa Vidovich at 293-1386.  See you there!

GRADUATE STUDENT DEGREE APPLICATIONS:

Graduate students who will complete degree requirements in Fall 2004 must complete the Application for Graduation and Diploma form no later than Friday, September 24.  You may access the application at the Office of Research and Graduate Studies web site, www.hsc.wvu.edu/som/resoff under forms.

PDA USERS DISCUSSION GROUP:

All faculty staff and students interested in learning or sharing knowledge about PDAs or handheld computers are welcome to attend the first meeting of the PDA Users Discussion Group.  It will occur Thursday September 16th in room 2116 between 12 and 12:50 PM. Please bring your own lunch.  Information will be presented on:  Locations that wireless PDAs can be used in the Health Sciences Center; books on PDAs which one can check out from the Health Sciences Library; PDA page supported by the HSL; answering PDA questions; practice beaming addresses between PDAs.

 

AIR FORCE ROTC:
Lt. Joe Robertson, USAF, will be at the HSC, 6th floor, in the School of Nursing, outside the Office of Student Services, on Monday, September 27, from 12 pm to 2 pm to meet with students who are interested in Air Force ROTC.  Students can receive scholarships for full tuition and fees plus a monthly stipend of $250-400 for living expenses by participating in Air Force ROTC.  For more information, contact Lt. CAMPUS WIDE ETD SEMINAR:

An Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) seminar will be held on Monday, October 4, 2004, from 3 to 5 pm in the NRCCE Building, Room 101A.  An additional session will be held Monday, November 1, from 3 to 5 pm at the same location.  More information is available at http://www.wvu.edu/~thesis/News/ETD_Grad_Seminar.htm


FREE NCLEX REVIEW COURSE:

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is offering free NCLEX review sessions, primarily for December graduates.  The sessions are Saturday, October 2, from 9 am to 3 pm at Magee-Womens Hospital, or Saturday, October 16, from 9 am to 3 pm at UPMC St. Margaret Conference Center.  Handouts and lunch will be provided, and free parking is available.  To reserve a seat, call 1-800-533-UPMC (8762).


SCHOOL NURSE CERTIFICATION:

School Nurse Certification at WVU will be discontinued in May 2005.  Any student or RN already in the process of getting this certification will be allowed to complete the requirements, but no new students will be admitted for certification.

CARRUTH CENTER HSC SATELLITE OFFICE:

The Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services announces the opening of a satellite office in Room 308 of the Health Sciences Center, located down the hall of Student Health.  Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, 1 pm to 5 pm.  To inquire about available services or to schedule an appointment, call 293-4431.  Available services include personal counseling, career counseling, and education counseling for poor academic performance, test anxiety, study difficulties, or problems with time management.


CHEMISTRY TUTORING:

The Chemistry Learning Center, located in Rooms 408 and 410 of Clark Hall, provides free tutoring in General Chemistry (CHEM 110, 111, 115, and 116) by upperclass undergraduates on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 7 to 10 pm.

SUMMER COURSE TRANSFER:

If you took classes at another college or university over the summer, be sure to have those courses transferred to WVU.  You should have an official transcript sent by the college or university to Health Sciences Admissions and Records, PO Box 9815, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV 26506.  Be sure to follow up with Student Services to be sure the course is on your WVU transcript.


BLOOD DRIVE
:

Wednesday, Sept. 22 - 7 a.m.- 6 p.m., Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, John Jones Conference Room (call 598-4095 for appointment).  Earn Community Service hours!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Head Start and Starting Points is looking for students to do health screenings for preschool age children throughout Mon. County.  Responsibilities include height, weight, B/P, oral exam and vision screening.  Hours are from 9 am to 12 or 1 pm.  Screenings begin 9/14 and run through mid-Oct.  Community service hours include travel time.  Sign up on the sheet outside the Skills Lab or call Gail VanVoorhis (293-0298, gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu) for more information.

 

Jake’s Run Head Start needs volunteers for screenings in height, weight, and B/P.  Contact Alyssa Musto at (304) 879-5158 or leave a voice mail message at (304) 291-9330 ext. 126.

 

The Health Fair is Friday, October 8 from 9 am to 9 pm, at the Morgantown Mall.  Students are asked to work 4 hour shifts.  You will need to bring your stethoscope to do blood pressure screenings.  Students will get a WVU shirt and 4 hours of community service.  This is a great way to practice patient skills and B/P skills.  Sign up with Betty Jurick in Health Restoration on or after September 20.

 

RN to BSN/MSN students are needed at the Health Fair to do finger sticks at the Diabetes Education Center Booth and help with a jeopardy game.  You can work a couple of hours or all day.  Sign up with Judy Klingensmith, klingensmithj@rcbhsc.wvu.edu

 

Prepare dinner for families at the WV grief center on Monday, September 20.  This will be a monthly dinner obligation.  Contact Gail VanVoorhis (293-0298, gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu) for more information.

 

The American Red Cross/Mountain Laurel Chapter is looking for volunteers to staff blood donation drives held in the John Jones Conference Center.  There are 3 areas to cover:  greeters, canteen, and escorts.  All are fun jobs and there will be a brief training session that will count as volunteer time also.  The first event is October 21, and 4 volunteers are needed from 12-3 pm and 4 volunteers from 3-6 pm.  This is an ongoing event that will be held in the HSC each month.  Call Carolyn Zinn at the ARC at 598-9500 ext. 114 to set up the training and volunteer.

Christian Help, Inc., a non-profit organization in Morgantown serving the needs of the less fortunate, has volunteer, internship and work study positions available to students.  Positions are available in the Clothing Store, Food Pantry, Women's Career Closet and Men's Clothing Closet, among other areas. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Senior level undergraduate or graduate nursing student needed to work with Dr. Laurie Badzek for the Ethics Center at the American Nurses Association.  Biggest part of the job would involve updating nursing ethics position statements for the ANA, searching the literature and interacting with members of the ANA Ethics Advisory Board.  Work approximately 10 hours per week.  Contact Dr. Badzek at lbadzek@hsc.wvu.edu for more information.
