School of Pharmacy Development
Your Support Makes a Difference The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy has a tradition of excellence in pharmacy education, research, and service. We have been able to maintain that tradition due to the support of a loyal and generous group of alumni, corporations, and friends. While West Virginia University is a “state-assisted” institution, there have been reductions in the base budget for the past two years. Private support sustains the future stability of the School and its programs by bridging the gap between the cost of educating students and fluctuations in state support. Gifts received through annual, capital, and planned giving programs are used to supplement support from the State of West Virginia. This support helps the School go beyond what is possible with its tax-based budget alone and provide a unique and innovative learning environment for our students and faculty. Supporting the School through a donation of any kind is a wise investment. A gift to the School of Pharmacy...... May be applied where the need is greatest. Your gift is a personal expression of commitment to the School, its students, programs, and services. Every gift, regardless of the size or form, will make a vital difference in sustaining and enhancing our commitment to excellence in pharmaceutical education, research, and service. School of Pharmacy Funding PrioritiesFund for Pharmacy – provides support to students, faculty, and staff for activities and initiatives that strengthen and enhance our mission. Fund for Pharmacy gifts provide the Dean invaluable flexibility in directing funds to where the need is greatest or when special opportunities arise. Examples include: Faculty and student travel to national conferences and meetings, professional development activities, research projects, equipment, and supply needs. Support for Students — support for scholarships and/or financial assistance is one of the most important investments a donor can make to insure the current and future success of the School of Pharmacy. Residencies/Fellowships — support is also needed to provide assistance to pharmacy practice residents and fellows specializing in aspects of pharmaceutical care, health policy, and/or clinical research. Academic Enhancements/Initiatives — professional development opportunities allow students to participate in activities that advance the practice of pharmacy while providing them with a readiness to use the best ideas and techniques of the moment. Faculty Development — without outstanding faculty, it is not possible for the School to fulfill its mission of teaching and providing high quality pharmaceutical educational programs. Support is needed for the resources faculty need as they pursue innovative teaching, research, and public service initiatives that ultimately improve the quality of life for citizens of the state as well as the nation. Facilities and Technology — the School must continue to update its facilities and use of technology to remain at the forefront of pharmacy education. The WV Drug Information Center — the only university-based one of its kind in the state, answers more than 3,000 questions a year from physicians, pharmacists, and other health-care providers regarding drugs and drug therapy that improves patient health. The Center has been non-profit since its founding in 1971. However, as operating costs have continually increased over the past 30 years, fewer state resources are available due to ongoing mandated budget cuts. Support is needed so that the Center can continue to provide much needed drug and medical information to assist health-care providers in improving patient care. Ways to Support the School of PharmacyAlumni and other friends may contribute to the WVU Foundation in many ways, all of which will benefit West Virginia University and the School of Pharmacy. In addition to providing support for the University and its mission, several types of gifts also afford significant benefits to the donor. Through the use of one or more of these methods, many people have found it possible to participate in the growth and advancement of WVU at a level they previously had not thought possible. Outright GiftsA common way of giving to the School is with an outright gift of cash, securities, real estate or personal property. These gifts are tax deductible and offer the distinct advantage of being immediately available to assist the School and its programs. PledgesYou may make a commitment of support payable over a period of one to five years. A pledge demonstrates your intention to make a gift to the School and may allow you to give more generously over a period of time than would be possible through a single contribution. Planned GiftsPlanned gifts provide special opportunities to enhance educational excellence at the School. This can be accomplished by including the School of Pharmacy in your overall financial and estate plans. Aside from the tax advantages associated with planned giving strategies, making a deferred gift allows you to support the School of Pharmacy without jeopardizing current or future income. Gifts through estate planning include: School of Pharmacy Giving Levels
