Mylan Center for Pharmaceutical Care Education The Mylan Center for Pharmaceutical Care Education opened in 1999 to provide facilities for our entry-level Pharm.D. program. The facility allows faculty to use different teaching methods and provide experiential education and opportunities. The center consists of several different areas with multiple capabilities. The primary area is a laboratory, including a wet lab facility, a computer laboratory, and a demonstration area. The lab is equipped with instruments which allow faculty to teach chemistry, compounding, and clinical applications. The laboratory also has laptop computers, and a networking system that gives students an opportunity to do everything from internet searches to using pharmacokinetic dosing programs. A full presentation system allows the instructor to provide multi-medial demonstrations. The laboratory is used primarily for the Pharmaceutical Care sequence of the curriculum. The Center includes a state-of-art sterile products facility and automated TPN compounder available to teach skills needed for the production of sterile products. The center also features three small classrooms used for electives, breakout sessions, or meetings. The largest of these classrooms is equipped with a presentation system that accommodates distance-learning activities. Much of the new curriculum uses case study material so there is a small library facility in the center that supports lab sessions. The library contains multiple copies of reference materials, computers, and equipment for student use. There are also model retail and hospital pharmacies in the facility. The retail area is equipped with items found in a retail store. Although the pharmacy is not licensed or used for patients, it is very valuable in instructing the student about pharmacy practices and counseling skills. The model hospital area contains carts similar to those found in hospitals for medication delivery and unit dose systems. There is also a hospital computer system and automated dispensing equipment. This allows student to become familiar in a particular setting before being sent on their practicum visits to outside locations.
