Graduate Programs
Ph.D Tracks - Pharmaceutical & Pharmacological Sciences and Health Outcomes Research The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy offers graduate programs in pharmaceutical sciences through its Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences and its Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy. The programs feature a close working relationship among students and graduate faculty and combine the advantages of being located in a college town community (Morgantown, West Virginia) with those associated with living in relatively close proximity to larger metropolitan areas such as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. West Virginia University, a comprehensive land-grant university in the West Virginia system of higher education, offers graduate work leading to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and, in some cases, a Master of Science (M.S.). The WVU School of Pharmacy is housed in the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center complex where health care, research, and graduate education are closely related. A medical library, audiovisual learning center, computer network facilities, laboratory animal quarters, and photo-illustration services are located within the Center and are available to graduate students. Other Schools such as Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Engineering, Business and Economics, Arts and Sciences, and several major libraries are located within the University. In addition, a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research facility is on campus, and Mylan Pharmaceuticals, the largest generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in the country is across the street. Departments and libraries on the Downtown campus are a short ride away on WVU's unique Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. The Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences Department is located in close proximity to the other health science center departments including the WVU Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. The Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy has established ties with many research centers within the University, and external West Virginia state agencies like the Bureau of Medical Services (Medicaid), Public Employees Insurance Agency, and the Bureau of Public Health. The department also has established collaborative ties with several pharmaceutical corporations and the state's larges managed care organization. These ties offer excellent opportunities for health outcomes and policy research. In addition, established graduate programs in business, public health, sociology, education, communications, and public administration provide opportunities for multidisciplinary graduate studies and research. An excellent source of information about this graduate program is Ms. Debbie Anderson at
