Dr. Halverson recently joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy, School of Pharmacy, after serving 10 years in the School of Medicine. He received a Ph.D. in Geography from West Virginia University with an emphasis of health disparities. During his career at the Health Sciences Center at WVU he served at the associate director and director of the Office for Social Environment and Health Research (OSEAHR) in the Department of Community Medicine. OSEAHR has published a number of federally-funded research monographs on chronic disease disparities in the U.S. with a particular focus on race/ethnicity. In addition OSEAHR had developed a regional focus on medically underserved populations in the Appalachian region and published several federally-funded monographs documenting health disparities for multiple causes of death and illness, behavioral risks, socioeconomic conditions, and medical care resources. Dr. Halverson has led several health disparities studies and has extensive experience working with large national datasets on health outcomes and risk factors related to behavior, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental characteristics. He is currently working as a core member of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and his current research focuses primarily on cancer disparities in the West Virginia and the Appalachian region.
