Dr. Smith’s contribution to the social and administrative sciences in pharmacy is in the area of post-marketing surveillance of prescription drugs. His specialty area includes studying the pharmacoeconomics and pharmacoepidemiology of medications used to treat asthma. His research focuses on reporting patterns of asthma-related prescription drug use in the population, and the influence of prescription drug use on patterns of asthma. His recent research work reported rates of asthma among recipients of Medicaid, investigated the influence of the use of inhaled corticosteroids on rates of asthma-related hospital admissions, and studied the effect of the use of inhaled corticosteroids in preventing asthma-related near-fatal events. Dr. Smith is a active member of the West Virginia Asthma Education and Prevention Program."
