HSC Flu Vaccination Schedule (P-1,2,3,4): The Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center will be providing Influenza vaccine this fall to be given free of charge to all HSC students, staff and faculty. The vaccine will be administered through the University’s Student Health Service. This program is an effort to keep health sciences students, staff and faculty healthier and more productive, and decrease possible spread of influenza among this group and the patients they care for or may be exposed to. Vaccinations will be offered while supplies last, and are recommended for all, in the John Jones conference center of the Health Sciences Center from 1-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, and from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13. Those who wish to receive the vaccination are required to bring a valid HSC employee or student identification badge and are encouraged to wear clothing that makes upper arm exposure easy. Flu vaccine will also be available to employees of WVU Hospitals and University Health Associates through the hospital's Employee Health department at a date to be determined by vaccine availability. An announcement will be made when the vaccine becomes available. The Student Health Service will also be offering flu shots to the general student population at the Student Recreation Center (for $15 each) on Oct. 18th and 26th from 3-8 p.m.

New Phi Lambda Sigma Program (P-1,2,3,4): Phi Lambda Sigma leadership society is initiating a new program this year which recognizes the dedicated leaders within the WVU School of Pharmacy. Each month PLS members will choose a new "Student Pharmacist Leader of the Month" to be recognized based on nomination forms sent in by peers, faculty, or staff. PLS members are not eligble for this award, but all other P1s-P4s are welcome. If someone who is nominated is not chosen one month, they may stay in the application pool to be chosen for the next month. Winners will receive a certificate and recogniton on the PLS board in the 8th floor Mylan Center hallway. This would be something great to add to a CV! Forms for September are due by Wednesday, October 4th by 1pm in mailbox #984 or to aprice@sole.wvu.edu.

Thank you for supporting the leaders of pharmacy

NAMI (P-1,2,3,4): From Dr. Gene Makela:
I am the advisor for the NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) -WVU group on the WVU campus. Our group is sponsoring an event in the Mountainlair as described below. I would appreciate if you could include the information below in your next Message of the Week in your respective schools. Please call me if you have questions.
Thanks very much.

Next week NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) -WVU will be sponsoring an informative video about one of the most disturbing phenomena that affects college-aged people - suicide. The video is approximately 30 mins in length and is titled The Truth about Suicide; Real Stories of Depression in College. Following the video, there will be a short discussion and mental health professionals will be available to lead the discussion and answer any questions. As 1/4 college students are affected by mental illness, our NAMI-WVU organization could benefit you, a friend, or family member. Our goal is to break down the stigma regarding individuals with psychiatric conditions and to provide education about where to get help, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. Please consider attending.

Date: October 2, 2006
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Greenbrier Room in Mountainlair

Light the Night Walk (P-1,2,3,4): The LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK is only a few days away. Our School of Pharmacy team is doing an AWESOME job! (Right now we have 50 members walking on our team and so far we've already turned in a little over $2000.)

Even though there are only a few days left there is still time to sign up....or if you're already signed up, there is still time to collect money. Remember every penny makes a difference.

FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATING ON SATURDAY....
Just a reminder, registration starts (rain or shine) at 5:30pm at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park on Sat. Sept 30th. If you have money to turn in on Saturday, please come a little earlier than 5:30 to make sure you get your money to me. Since we have such a large group it will take a little time to get all our money turned in.

My tentative plan is for our group to meet off to the right of the amphitheater; perhaps just under the bridge. If we get there and that is not possible we'll do what we can to stay in that general area so that we can all find each other. If anyone would get there and not be able to find our group, my cell phone # is 304-282-2483. Have my number with you on Saturday and feel free to call me if you can't find anyone.

To try and cut down on the amount of money I'll have to collect on Saturday I'd like to collect some money on Friday. On Friday the 29th I'll be in the School of Pharmacy hallway (right outside Debbie Anderson's office) from 12noon to 12:30. If at all possible please stop by and turn in any money you've collected. Again, this will make registration a little less hectic on Saturday.

THANKS to everyone for you time and participation.
Please contact me with questions, concerns and comments.
