Pharmacy Honors Courses
Spring 2008 Semester
Students enrolled in the West Virginia University Honors Program may complete up to 12 hours of honors credits within the School of Pharmacy through required courses in the pharmacy curriculum. To sign up for an Honors course, students will need to replace the course for which they are block registered with the honor’s section of that course. Please note that all honor’s sections of courses are denoted in the STAR system with “LEC H01” for the honors section. There are three Honors currently available in the School of Pharmacy. Honors courses are only available to students who are currently enrolled in the Honors Program. You will also need to register for 498 Honors (1 credit hour). PHAR 726 - Chemistry of Drug Action 2 (2 + 1 credit hours) (CRN 14914, MW, 2 cr. hrs., 2:00-2:50 p.m., Room 3084, Griffith) - The additional credit hour will provide students with advanced study in drug design. Students will be given reading assignments from the current literature on drug design and new drugs in development. The students will be given 4 quizzes on this material as well as write a term paper on novel approaches to drug therapy. The students will meet for one additional hour per week throughout the semester. Students will receive 3 hours of honors credit.
PHAR 741 - Clinical Pharmacokinetics (4 + 1 credit hours) (CRN 14915, MWF, 3 cr. hrs., 1:00-1:50 p.m.,1901, Hodges) - The one additional hour of credit would allow students to explore topics in the field through literature evaluation, computer simulation, and debate. The class would be designed for students to complete 3 to 4 projects throughout the semester, and to meet periodically (4 to 5 times per semester) to share their findings and results with one another. Students will receive 4 hours of honors credit.
Fall 2008 Semester:
PHAR 715 - Pathophysiology/Therapeutics 1 (4 + 1 credit hours) - The one additional credit hour will provide students with the opportunity to explore the impact of drug therapy on the lives of older adults, to understand the impact of the new Medicare prescription drug benefit on older adults, and to describe the implications of the Medicare prescription drug benefit for pharmacists in West Virginia. Students will meet periodically (approximately 4 times during the semester) for one additional hour per week. Students will conduct a patient interview, be given additional reading assignments, and develop an essay on a current topic in geriatrics. Students will receive 5 hours of honors credit.
