Director -
Marie A. Abate received both her B.S. and PharmD. Degrees from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. She served as Assistant Director of the WVCDHI from 1981 - 1985, Associate Director from 1985 - 1986, and has been Director of the WVCDHI since that time. Dr. Abate has an extensive amount of experience in drug information education, service, and research/scholarly activities. She has coordinated and taught two required didactic drug information courses and serves as one of the preceptors for the experiential drug information rotation in the WVCDHI for Doctor of Pharmacy degree students. She is currently a member of the drug information advisory panel for Annals of Pharmacotherapy and has served as a manuscript reviewer for several other journals. Dr. Abate has authored or co-authored almost 40 publications and authored chapters for three books. She has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on approximately 17 different grants, generating over 1 million dollars in funding. One of these projects involved developed a comprehensive computer educational program designed to teach individuals how to critically evaluate published drug studies. This program is being used by various schools and colleges of pharmacy.
Assistant Director -
Matthew L. Blommel received his PharmD. Degree from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy. He then completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Blommel acquired drug information experience during his residency at the University of Pittsburgh and at Eckerd Health Systems where he provided drug information to patients and health care professionals from 2002-2003. He began serving as Assistant Director of the West Virginia Center for Drug and Health Information (WV CDHI) in October 2003. Dr. Blommel serves as one of the preceptors for the experiential drug information rotation in the WV CDHI for Doctor of Pharmacy degree students. He will also teach students in various didactic courses in the School of Pharmacy and will participate in laboratories designed to give pharmacy students hands-on practice with electronic sources of drug information.
