STEPS BECOMES A REGIONAL TEST SITE FOR FES AND FUSE

Posted on 5/23/2016

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) developed the Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) program, similarly to the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program, to encourage a standard set of skills in basic endoscopic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract.  They developed the Fundamental Use of Surgical EnergyTM (FUSE) program to meet the need for increased education and training in the principles and properties of operating electrosurgical instruments safely.

The FES program is a comprehensive educational and assessment tool designed to teach and evaluate the fundamental knowledge, clinical judgment and technical skills required in the performance of basic gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic surgery (endoscopy).  FUSE is an educational program designed to certify that a successful candidate has demonstrated the knowledge fundamental to the safe use of surgical energy-based devices in the operating room, endoscopic suite and other procedural areas.

Both programs are now available at WV STEPS to complement our FLS testing center, allowing physicians to certify their skills. This test center has filled a great need in this region as our physicians no longer need to travel great distances to complete these exams.
