Grand Opening of the Expansion

October 9, 2015 marks the official opening of the WV STEPS phase 2 expansion.  Twelve exam rooms, two 10 bed labs, a new reception area, computer lab, 9 offices, and an SP staging area comprise the 14,000 square feet of state-of-the-art simulation environment.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was well attended.  We heard exciting and emotional speeches from Dr. Gee, the president of WVU; Dr. Marsh, vice president and executive dean of Health Sciences; Dr. Wilks, medical director of WV STEPS; and David & Jo Ann Shaw, without whose generous donation this expansion would not have ensued.    

 

 

SP Procedures for the New Space

The new reception area is not far from the old reception area, on the OPPOSITE side of the 3rd floor elevators.   When you come in to work, please sign in at Wilma’s desk (soon we will have electronic sign in, stay tuned!). 


From there you will exit again, turn left down the hall to the last door on the left – the SP staging area/lounge: 

 

 

There you will find a nice seating area, snack table, computers, and changing area.  If you wish to use the lockers, please bring your own lock. 

Restrooms are located in the outer hallway, around the corner to the left of the SP staging area.

 

It is imperative that you be ON TIME for student encounters.  In addition, missed encounters are very difficult to accommodate.  If you must miss an encounter, please notify us ASAP.

We expect SPs to be signed in, changed, and in the designated instruction area PRIOR TO the encounter start time.  Please adjust your commute to allow for traffic and parking.  Thank you – your precision will help keep our student activities running smoothly!

 

 

Parking Update

We met with the director of parking and ironed out all inconsistencies with SP parking. Since all SP events will now take place at HSC (no more POC encounters) and the parking booth will have a list of all SP activities and participants, you need only report to the parking attendant that you are going to STEPS. You will receive a permit to park near the Pavilion entrance.

Barb & Ramona

Most of you know by now that Ramona Hudak retired at the end of June.  At that time Barb Doyle moved into a part time position with plans to retire next year.   

 

New GTA & MUTA Client

Our GTAs have been invited to train the Physician’s Assistant students at West Liberty University next spring. Congratulations ladies!  In addition, we have been asked to provide MUTA models for student practice in December.  MUTAs are male urological teaching associates.  Currently we have 12 volunteers and hope to recruit more in the future as we explore the possibility of starting a MUTA program for teaching the male urogenital exam.

 

SP Memorials

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of two of our most dear, sweet, long time Standardized Patients, Shirley Bellman (August 2015) and Glenda Summers (September 2015). We will always remember their enormous contributions to our program and the lasting impressions they made on our students.  They are sorely missed.

              

 

Upcoming Encounters

  • M2 Graded History will begin in November - availability email coming soon.
  • Final CPX session will take place on January 8 and will be a half day only.
  • M1 Ultrasound begins in January and extends through March.
  • SP open house in December – date TBA
  • OSCE April 4-14 daily (no evening hours)
