Dr Zhongxin Wu is measuring NGF levels in the lungs using ELISA. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is essential in promoting and maintaining differentiation, growth, and survival of the central and peripheral nervous systems, including innervation of the airways.

Dr. Mario Scuri is looking at a new core piece of equipment that the department of pediatrics recently acquired named Luminex that allows us to measure several different biologic parameters at once.

Dr. S. Jamal Mustafa is setting up the chambers to measure the 'Lung Function' in freely moving live mice. This setup is used to measure the effect of drugs on the breathing pattern in mice. Dr. S. Jamal Mustafa and Dr. Ahmed Nadeem are looking at the 'human airway smooth muscle cells' in a culture dish. They are trying to create a model of human asthma in a culture dish so that they can study the effect of various drugs to reverse the behavior of these cells to normal cells.


WVU awarded $2.1 million to study air pollution’s effect on the cardiovascular system

West Virginia University cardiovascular researcher Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Ph.D., has received a $2.1 million grant to study the effects of air pollution particles and engineered nanoparticles on the cardiovascular system.

Old laboratory benches were replaced with new bench space that freed up large amounts of floor
space. This renovation of space allowed for the placement of two new research stations in the
lab (funded by the grant).

Dr. Vince Castranova and one of his graduate students, Tina Sager, utilize the electronic cell counter/sizer; which determines the size and number of cells of various cell types.

Dr. Jim Antonini is examining tissue samples from lungs that have been exposed to inhaled welding fumes.
Dr. Jeffrey Fedan is conducting an experiment using the Ussing chamber to measure the effects of drugs on ion transport of airway epithelium. The apparatus measures short-circuit current and transepithelial resistance. Here, the effects of agents that affect epithelial cell volume are being investigated
