POSITION SUMMARY:   Performs and analyzes a limited number of clinical laboratory tests of a basic nature in one laboratory division (i.e. Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, or Molecular) by standard operating policies and procedures, understands method principles, performs quality control, performs preventative maintenance, reviews and analyzes results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

If hired after 6/30/2019, Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT).

If hired before 6/30/2019, Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT);

OR High School Diploma or equivalent AND Graduated from an approved medical or clinical laboratory training program or Completed an official US Military 50-week medical Laboratory training and have held the enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist;

OR Was licensed as a CLP-MLT before the new WV Clinical Laboratory rule’s effective date of June 1, 2017 and have met all applicable requirements.

2.

Licensed as a Laboratory Technician in the state of West Virginia within 90 days of employment.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

2.

Licensed as a Laboratory Technician in the state of West Virginia within 30 days of employment.

 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1.

Accepts and promptly prepares patient specimens in order to perform in an efficient manner, basic diagnostic procedures designed to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the medical staff.

2.

Follows standard operating procedures (SOP) developed to produce accurate reproducible results.

3.

Operates basic laboratory equipment/instrumentation consistent with standard operating procedures and manufacturer's instruction manuals.

4.

Prepares reagents, solutions and/or therapeutic products and restocks as required to complete necessary testing/requests according to the standard operating policies and procedures, (e.g., daily review of results and quality control records).

5.

Maintains all records accurately, neatly and legibly in ink (unless otherwise required).

6.

Performs required quality control procedures on a predetermined schedule to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation in order to assure timely accurate reproducible test results insuring quality patient care.

7.

Performs routine maintenance, calibrations and quality control of basic laboratory equipment/instrumentation as directed by the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures SOP within the predetermined time schedule, recognizing errors, responding in an appropriate manner, and documenting completion.

8.

Recognizes basic instrument malfunctions and performs minor troubleshooting and aids in appropriate problem resolution, in a timely manner.

9.

Participates, as required, in proficiency testing using established procedures.

10.

Requests input and direction, as needed, from the Medical Director(s) or Technical Specialist regarding medical, technical, quality assurance, and quality control problems.

11.

Utilizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.

12.

Completes assigned workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP, emergency).

13.

Maintains effective communication with laboratory divisions and sections, other hospital departments and patients/public, as necessary, to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

14.

Effectively and in a timely manner communicates test results to the health care team.
