PRN Phlebotomy Technician (88048)

POSITION SUMMARY:   Collects, Processes, Stores and transports blood, body fluids and tissue specimens. Performs clerical functions such as faxing, copying and mailing of reports and answering the phones professionally.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Successful completion of a formal training course in Phlebotomy from a recognized school acceptable to Laboratory Management.

 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

High school Diploma or equivalent.

2.

Completion of certification or registry exam given by a Nationally recognized certifying agency within One (1) year of hire date.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

One (1) year of recent phlebotomy experience.

1.

Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques.

2.

Properly identifies patients using two identifiers consistent with departmental Standard Operating Procedure.

3.

Labels tubes and containers according to established Standard Operating Procedures.

4.

Knows and uses appropriate equipment for all related procedures: Knows contents of anticoagulants and additives in collection tubes and demonstrates competency with all venipuncture equipment.

5.

Instructs patients in the proper collection and preservation of patient-collected specimens. Provides patient handouts when applicable.

6.

Maintains confidentiality of hospital and patient related information consistent with established policies.

7.

Greets and provides direction to patients and visitors with courtesy, accuracy and professionalism.

8.

Maintains a cooperative and professional working relationship with other members of the laboratory and hospital staff.

9.

Actively tracks and resolves issues regarding missing samples or requisitions in a timely manner. Pursues the matter to a logical conclusion before sample deterioration.

10.

Follows established departmental Standard Operating Procedures when drawing specimens adjacent to or above IV Sites.

11.

Maintains a clean and safe working environment & follows established Infection Control Procedures for all job related functions.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general Medical Laboratory Terminology and familiarity with general office equipment.

2.
