POSITION
SUMMARY: Performs
phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw blood) services on
patients, as requested by physicians, in support of WVU Medicine’s mission of
patient care. |
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |

EDUCATION,
CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: |
|
1. |
High School Diploma or Equivalent. |
2. |
Certified or eligible for certification as a phlebotomist by
National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical
Pathologist (ASCP). |
3. |
West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal, if
applicable, required for DHHR regulated area |

Six months of phlebotomy experience. |

1. |
Performs phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw
blood) services on patients, as requested by physicians, in support of
University Medical Laboratories/WVU Medicine mission of patient care. |
2. |
Responsibilities
include operation of basic laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, computer
systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.) and excellent
communication skills toward patients, clients and staff. Other
duties may be assigned. |
3. |
Performs,
in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines
designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the physician. |
4. |
Follows standard operating procedures
to perform basic diagnostic procedures (e.g., bleeding time) to produce
accurate results. |
5. |
Restocks, as required, the work area
of needed supplies to assist co‑workers in the performance of their
duties. |
6. |
Must
demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the
patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory
standard operating procedures. |
7. |
Utilizes
time, material, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing and
arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. |
8. |
Promptly
collects patient specimens, to reduce wastage, unnecessary requests for
additional specimens, and undue delays in result reporting, in accordance
with the standard operating procedure. |
9. |
Maintains
effective communication with the laboratory sections, administrative office,
personnel, patients and other departments as necessary to assure
identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the
hospital's mission of patient care. |
10. |
Answers
the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit. |
11. |
Keeps
current in all communications (e.g., reading circulated material, staff meetings,
mailboxes, and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use. |
12. |
Effectively
communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply
level to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the
continual needs of patients. |
13. |
Refers
to supervisor or nursing staff as appropriate any technical problems or
unusual patient occurrences. |
14. |
Contacts
nursing staff promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test
requisitions/orders; requesting new requisitions/orders in accordance with
established laboratory policies. |
15. |
Notifies
patient care units promptly of uncollected patient specimens in order to
expedite accurate test results in a timely manner. |
16. |
Communicates
all appropriate information to patients and/or the public necessary for their
understanding of the procedure before, during and after designated procedure. |
17. |
Promptly
and accurately completes computer entry of all requested laboratory tests,
accepting only patient specimens that are properly labeled and requisitions
that are properly completed, in accordance with established laboratory
policies. |
18. |
Assists
hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and/or referring such
personnel to the appropriate area or laboratory. |
19. |
Contacts
patient care units promptly for resubmission of improperly labeled specimens
and/or improperly completed requisitions, in order to expedite accurate
testing in a timely manner. |
20. |
Participates
in educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future
needs of the phlebotomy service, laboratory, hospital, and the university in
support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research. |
21. |
Participates
in the ongoing continuing education by attending in services and impromptu
consultations, as dictated by their needs and the needs of the laboratory. |
22. |
Participates,
as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as
established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist). |
