POSITION SUMMARY:   To provide services in anatomic pathology under direction of a qualified pathologist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Master’s degree in Health Science.

2.

ASCP Pathology Assistant Certification.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

One (1) year experience in a Pathologist Assistant position or a minimum of 1800 hours completed during clinical rotations.

 

 

 

 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1.

Performs gross processing operating room and clinic specimens.

2.

Assists in frozen section preparation of operating room specimens.

3.

Teaches junior (1st and 2nd yr) residents proper grossing techniques as described in the Pathology Department’s standard gross pathology protocols.

4.

Implements all operating room tissue-based research protocols, to include procurement of samples, processing of samples and notification of investigators regarding sample readiness.

5.

Provides data for monthly Surgical Pathology Quality Assurance reports.

6.

Autopsy Pathology – preparation of human postmortem examinations.

7.

Ascertains proper legal authorization for autopsy.

8.

Retrieves decedent’s medical chart and other pertinent data for review with the attending and resident pathologist(s).

9.

Confers with attending and resident pathologist(s) to identify any special techniques and procedures to be utilized in the completion of the postmortem examination.

10.

Notifies attending clinician, funeral home and all other appropriate authorities (including law enforcement agencies) prior to the beginning of the autopsy and coordinate any requests for special specimen sampling.

11.

Performs postmortem examinations that may include external examinations, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection and dictation or recoding of data.

12.

Assists in supervision and training of residents in pathology involving documentation, evisceration, dissection and dictation.

13.

Selects, prepares and submits appropriate gross tissue sections for frozen section analysis as well as for light, electron and immunofluorescent microscopy.

14.

Obtains biological specimens for studies including flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry and perform special procedures such as coronary artery perfusion, central nervous system perfusion, etc.

15.

Photographs the body, organs, microscopic slides and other pertinent materials.

16.

Prepares information and data pertinent to the preparation of the preliminary summarization of the circumstances surrounding the death and supervise the preparation of the body for release.

17.

Assures proper maintenance of equipment, the provision of adequate supplies and the cleanliness of the autopsy suite.

18.

Prepares and provides gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens from autopsy.
