POSITION SUMMARY:   

The Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all point of care testing performed in inpatient units and hospital affiliated clinics according to manufacturer’s instruction, CLIA requirements, and The Joint Commission standards.  The Point of Care Coordinator assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or a related science such as  Microbiology, Biology,

or Chemistry.

2.

Licensed as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia required within 90 days of employment.

 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists

(ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) preferred.

2.

Licensed as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia within 30 days of employment preferred.

1.

Engages in activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, forms, data sheets, accreditation information, licensure requirements, safety orientation, continuing education requirements, proficiency testing surveys, , to meet the service commitment of the POC testing in a timely and cost effective manner.

2.

Develops and follows standard operating policies and procedures to ensure quality point of care testing Procedures are written according to appropriate guidelines, maintained according to retention standards and readily available for testing personnel reference.

3.

Consistently maintains all records as required by accrediting agencies, which is easily retrieved and available for analysis.

4.

Maintains working knowledge of equipment and technological improvements relative to accreditation, licensure and proficiency testing.

5.

Assists the POC staff in the planning, development, and evaluation of quality assurance monitors.

6.

Evaluates, validates and implements new point of care testing technology.

7.

Coordinates the quality assurance plan for POC testing to reflect current TJC, CLIA and hospital standards. Reviews records for quality assurance and quality control to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation to assure timely accurate reproducible test results ensuring quality patient care through retrospective audits and root cause analysis of unique incidents. The Quality Assurance Plan is reviewed at least annually.

8.

Recognizes errors, problems and utilizes expertise to coordinate problem resolution for point of care testing including electronic interfacing, in a timely manner.

9.

Assures compliance with accrediting and licensure requirements of proficiency testing.

10.

Reviews and evaluates, as needed, quality assurance records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends, and correlates data with common physiological conditions to assure quality patient test results.

11.

Is able to work autonomously while also seeking guidance and input as needed from laboratory and nursing leadership.

12.

 Monitors results via electronic interfaces or written testing logs to ensure completion of records. Monitors and troubleshoots issues related to electronically interfaced testing.

13.

Completes assigned tasks within established turnaround times by flexing organization or work according to priority while minimizing waste of time, material and resources.

14.

Initiates effective communication interdepartmentally and interdepartmentally, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

15.

Under the guidance of the POC Medical Director, communicates laboratory test results effectively and in a timely manner, to the health care team.

16.

Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research.

17.

Participates, as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

18.

 Maintains current knowledge of latest developments and techniques in point of care testing.
