POSITION
DESCRIPTION
|
POSITION SUMMARY: Will provide continuous ECMO/ECLS support
for the critically ill patient. |
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: |
|
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: |
|
1. |
Current License to practice Registered
Professional Nursing in West Virginia OR; Current License to practice as a Registered
Respiratory Therapist in West Virginia |
EXPERIENCE: |
|
1. |
Two years
nursing in adult or pediatric ICU; RRT experience in either pediatric or
adult ICU. |

Bachelor of Science in Nursing |
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The

Adhere
to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment
by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and
team-building. |

Follow
hospital policies and procedures and assume responsibility for keeping
informed about changes in policies and procedures. |
3. |
Required
to work 1-2 weekends a month. |
4. |
Required
to find a certified ECMO specialist to cover their shift if unable to work a
scheduled shift. If the shift goes
without coverage more than once the RN/RT will be asked to leave the
ECLS/ECMO team. |
5. |
Will
Follow WVU Healthcare ECLS/ECMO guidelines on placing a patient on ECMO,
treating a patient on ECMO, & decannulating a patient. |
6. |
Participates
in Quality Improvement initiatives and research. |
7. |
Ensures
that appropriate supplies are available to provide ECMO as required. |
8. |
Educational
opportunities will include teaching bedside nursing and patient families of Extra
Corporeal Life Support. |
9. |
Assures
to maintain competency with ECLS/ECMO procedures, at least 25 hours quarterly
and 100 hours annually. If these
cannot be met with patient care, they will commit to be available for wet lab
sessions to meet these demands. |
10. |
Required
to participate in a 2 week ECMO course at WVUH and pass a written annual
exam. |
11. |
Maintains
current knowledge of ECMO procedures, techniques, and research and enhances
his or her knowledge to improve professional growth and development. |
12. |
Attend
ECLS/ECMO team monthly review of Quality reports, Equipment concerns,
Staffing, and patient post procedure follow up. |
13. |
Will
attend a prompt review of any major complication or death of a patient while
on ECMO with the ECLS/ECMO Coordinator & director. |
