POSITION SUMMARY:   Acts as a resource for respiratory therapists and Supervises Staff.  Supports and educates staff in treating and caring for patients within scope of practice.  Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians/therapists.  Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check and operate equipment.  Maintains compliance as defined by College of American Pathologists/CLIA for blood gas lab. This includes but is not limited to staff competencies, quality control, preparation and review of monthly reports for University Healthcare.  Works directly with lab personnel on process improvement for the blood gas lab/Point of care testing as it relates to the respiratory therapy department and CAP/JC.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

2.

Licensed by the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care as LRTR 

3.

Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

4.

Obtain certification in ACLS, PALS, and NRP within 6 months of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

Three years of clinical experience as a respiratory care practitioner

1.

Participates with Director with interviewing and selecting staff.  Assists with departmental training and orientation, and assigns departmental staff.

2.

Assist Director in maintaining standards of performance for criteria based position descriptions and performance appraisals.  Makes recommendations for personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions and disciplinary actions.  Performance appraisals must be completed by annual established deadline. 

3.

Schedules and adjusts staff to meet facility needs considering staff competency, established standards and regulatory requirements, including appropriate supervision, and wage and hour law.

4.

Makes recommendations and provides input to the Director in monitoring and evaluating the operating and capital budget within the specified limits capital expenditure budget needs of the department.  Initiates efforts which promote efficiency, reduce waste and improve services.

5.

Maintains and reports departmental information and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes meeting the required time standards.

6.

Interprets to staff, and when appropriate to others, policies, procedures, standards of service and practice for the department regarding budget and financial issues.

7.

Follows hospital, state and federal guidelines for ensuring safe environment for workers, patients and public.  Maintains and monitors staff compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.  Including privacy, patient confidentiality and HIPAA.

8.

Ensures the facilities and equipment for patient services are maintained to promote comfort, efficiency and safety for patients and staff.  Documents and reports malfunctioning equipment immediately to appropriate management staff.   

9.

Obtains work related continuing education as required for professional licensure.

10.

Remains current and responsive to changes in healthcare and delivery standards established by professional organizations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and the needs of the organization.

11.

Provides train-the-trainer guidance to staff who in turn train others outside the department regarding lab ordering, specimen collection and labeling procedures, waived testing techniques, and other applicable radiology processes or procedures.

12.

Develops and maintains a process to identify failures in quality as they occur; ensure that all necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from established performance characteristics are identified.  Reports quality concerns to management.

Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing.

2.

Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).

3.

Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift.
