POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Professional Nurse (RN) coordinates the nursing care for assigned patients.    Utilizing the nursing process, the Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements and evaluates, in collaboration with the patient, family and other health team members, the nursing care for assigned patients, demonstrating clinical competency and maintaining standards of professional nursing.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid WV RN license.  Diploma, ADN/ASN, BSN.  Minimum of one year health care experience preferred.  BLS required.                                                       

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

1.   Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves for 11-12 hours, with frequent changes and hand washing.

2.   Able to tolerate working with and around noxious odors

3.   Use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse

4.   Answer telephones and transcribe messages

5.   Communicate verbally, written and electronically with healthcare personnel, families and patients.

6.   May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental and patient needs.

7.   May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.

8.   May be exposed to virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens in working environment.

9.   May be exposed to traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries and death.

10.  Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly)

11.  Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift.

12.  Able to lift 40 pounds from floor to waist.

13.  Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up in bed self-assisting adult patients.

A.   Performs all duties and assumes staff nurse responsibilities while providing patient care.

 

1.     Collects, documents and analyzes the patient’s current health status and medical history. Completes admission assessment.

 

2.     Formulates and initiates plan of care (when appropriate) based on patient needs. Establishes priority of care based on physical, developmental, and psychological needs. Initiates nursing interventions based on relevant data collection. 

 

3.     Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of interventions and modifies the plan of care and expected outcomes as appropriate. Applies these principles while monitoring patient condition and while providing pain management and other interventions that would be appropriate.

 

4.     Appropriately assesses patient/family learning needs. Provides teaching materials and properly documents when teaching has been initiated, reinforced, and completed.

 

5.     Demonstrates age appropriate medication administration while using two unique patient identifiers. Documents medication administration accurately, including its effectiveness when appropriate. Scans patient and medication barcodes (when appropriate) in Meditech 85% of the time on units that use BMV as applicable.

 

B.   Facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution between staff, physicians and departments.

 Narcotic counts, Incident reports, Equipment failures, Crash     cart checks, Medication security.  Radiation safety.

5.     Identifies proper PPE for use in airborne, droplet, contact, and standard precautions.

6.     Collects and transports specimens in approved containers, according to laboratory specifications. Labels all specimens correctly in the presence of the patient when appropriate.

7.     Routinely follows universal precautions in all aspects of patient care, including before invasive procedures are performed.

G.   Takes accountability / responsibility for the correct and documented use of health care resources on the nursing floor.

 

1.     Exercises proper stewardship through the appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and time.
