POSITION SUMMARY: A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is
an Ultrasound professional that is qualified by professional credentialing
and/or academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care
services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. Responsible for the independent operation of
sonographer equipment, and for performing and communicating results of
diagnostic examinations using Sonography, under the supervision of the Radiologists. Responsible for daily operations of the
sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of
equipment failures, and quality assessment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography program that is accredited
by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(CAAHEP). Demonstrates current knowledge
of ultrasonography practices. Demonstrates
competency in all procedures within the scope of practice as appropriate to the
ages of the patients served. Demonstrates
good customer service skills and teamwork attitude. Familiar with CQI and its relation to
ultrasound. Active certification by
American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the appropriate
specialties (Abdomen, OB/Gyn, Vascular - preferred). Current compliance with continuing medical
education (CME) requirements as needed.
BLS
certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Able to wear latex or
vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing.
2. Use a computer
keyboard, monitor and mouse
3. Answer telephones and
transcribe messages
4. Communicate verbally,
written and electronically with healthcare personnel, families and patients.
5. May be scheduled to
work various shifts based on departmental and patient needs.
6. May be required to
travel between facilities/buildings.
7. May be exposed to
virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens in working environment.
8. May be exposed to
traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries and death.
9. Must meet Department
of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds
of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to
10 pounds of force constantly)
10. Able to bend, stoop,
reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour
shift.
11. Able to lift 40
pounds from floor to waist.
12. Able to ambulate,
position, turn and pull up self-assisting adult patients.
13. Possible exposure
to: ionizing radiation and sharps.

A. Ultrasonographer
Duties and Responsibilities

1. Explains
procedures of a level the patient will understand (i.e., speaking slowly and
at a level that can be heard by geriatric patients, explains to parent or
legal guardian as appropriate).
Displays compassion, empathy and concern for adult and geriatric patients. Acts as a proactive community education
liaison in all aspects of breast healthcare. |

2. Produces
ultrasound images of diagnostic quality on adult and pediatric patients with
the selection of appropriate scanning and imaging parameters; assists the
physicians; consults with radiologist; and performs procedures according to
established protocols for: OB/GYN,
Abdominal) Pelvic, Vascular, PVR and Small Parts. Forwards completed exams to radiologist for
evaluation and dictation. |

3. Provides
appropriate patient care as required.
Practices sterile techniques and universal precautions. Administers
first aid and CPR as required. |

4. Assures
that all required consent, history and screening forms are completed and
verified by signature of customer and/or legal guardian and/or physician,
and/or technologist prior to performing procedure. |

5. Analyses
sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history and
communicates to attending physician.
Communicates with other health care professionals, including patient
referral sources, verbally and in writing. |
