Directories

For any listing of people who are in the HSC Directory, use the HSC Directory macro. Do not list people who are in Directory in any other way in the Umbraco editor.

Directory is the central application that ensures information for all faculty and staff remain up-to-date. It allows all of the websites to utilize the correct information. Hand-made directory pages lead to outdated and inconsistent content.

How to add a person or list of people using the HSC Directory macro in the Umbraco editor

  1. Place the cursor on a new line in the Umbraco editor
  2. Select the “Insert macro” button
  3. Expand the “Choose a macro” dropdown and select “HSC Directory”
  4. (Optional) Enter a Title for the people listed
  5. Use one of the the three fields (User ID, Feed URL, or Department ID) to get a list of people from Directory
  6. (Optional) Selecting the “Sort by User ID/Feed URL List Order” checkbox will list the people in the order that the comma separated IDs are placed in the User ID field or at the end of the generated Feed URL. If this checkbox is not selected the people will be listed in order of position by default (Chair, etc.). This checkbox does not work when using the Department ID field to list people from Directory.
  7. (Optional) Selecting the “Hide User Photo” checkbox will hide each person’s photo in the list

Getting a list of people from Directory

There are three methods for getting a list of people from Directory to display using the HSC Directory macro - User ID, Feed URL, and Department ID.

User ID

Each person listed in the HSC Directory is assigned a unique ID. A list of people can be generated in the HSC Directory macro by entering each user’s ID into the User ID field separated by commas.

How can I find a user’s ID?

While viewing a person’s profile in the HSC Directory, you will find the person’s user ID at the end of the URL in the browser’s address bar after “Index/”.

Department ID

Each department page in the HSC Directory is assigned a unique ID. A list of departments can be generated in the HSC Directory macro by entering each department’s ID into the Department ID field separated by commas.

How can I find a department’s ID?

While viewing a department’s directory page in the HSC Directory, you will find the department’s ID at the end of the URL in the browser’s address bar after “Department?id=”.

Feed URL

A General Feed URL is a URL generated by the Directory Manager tool that allows it to communicate Directory information to the Umbraco websites. Feed URLs can be customized for specific use cases, by including one or more user IDs, one or more department IDs, or a combination of the two.

How can I generate a Feed URL?

You must have access to the Directory Manager tool to be able to generate a Feed URL. If you are not an editor please refer to the Directory Management section below.

  1. Go to the Directory Manager on SOLE.
  2. Click the “MORE” link at the end of the links listed at the top.
  3. Select “JSON FEEDS”.

    • Type a department name into the Departments field and select a department from the list in the autocomplete dropdown.
    • Type a person’s name into the Users field and select a person from the list in the autocomplete dropdown.
Each department or person’s ID is added to the end of the Generated Feed URL.
  5. Copy the General Feed URL and paste it into the Feed Url field in the HSC Directory macro in the Umbraco editor

How can I edit a Feed URL?

Directory management

The Directory Manager tool allows a wide variety of information to be added to people. In the event anyone in your feed leaves the university, their information will automatically be removed from Directory and the website.

How can I edit the information for a department or a user?

If you do not know who the editor is for a specific department or person, click the “Additions/Corrections?” on a department’s directory page or a person’s profile page. This will show the contact information for the person(s) who have access to edit the department’s directory page or a person’s profile page.

If you are an editor in Directory and would like to be re-trained on all of the features of Directory please contact cmsdesk@hsc.wvu.edu to request training.

How can I get my photo taken?

You can get headshots taken every Tuesday morning with Bob Beverly. These images do not show up in Directory or your website until they have been cropped and updated in the Directory Manager.
