Architectural Interests

Fallingwater is recognized as one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most acclaimed works, and in a 1991 poll of members of the American Institute of Architects, it was voted "the best all-time work of American architecture." It is a supreme example of Frank Lloyd Wright's concept of organic architecture, which promotes harmony between man and nature through design so well integrated with its site that buildings, furnishings, and surroundings become part of a unified, interrelated composition. Wright embraced modern technology to achieve this, designing spaces for living which expressed architecturally the expansive freedom of the American frontier. The collections of the Fallingwater Museum are comprised of more than 950 works of art including prints, paintings, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, art glass, and miscellaneous household objects. Of particular significance in the collection are the 169 pieces of original walnut furniture, custom designed by Wright for Fallingwater. These pieces represent one of the most complete ensembles of Wright designed, site-specific furniture.

Kentuck Knob was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the last decade of his career for I.N. and Bernardine Hagan. Completed in 1956, this deluxe Usonian is nestled high in the Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania, just seven miles from Fallingwater and six miles from Route 40, the historic National Road. Constructed of tidewater red cypress, glass, and 800 tons of native sandstone, with a copper roof, the home embodies Mr. Wright’s principles of organic architecture.  A sweeping view of the Youghiogheny River gorge, and surrounding hills and farmland, awaits at the end of the tour. A sculpture meadow with 35 major works enhances your visit.

Natural Wonders

Cooper’s Rock State Forest Nearly 50 miles of hiking trails wind through the forest.  One of the more popular trails, Henry Clay Iron Furnace Trail takes you on a trip back in time as you round the last bend of the trail you find a huge stone structure used for producing iron in the 1800's. It is located in a grassy glade in an otherwise undisturbed forest.

Raven Rock Trail descends gradually to a rock escarpment overlooking the Cheat River. The masterpiece of Coopers Rock State Forest is the Cheat River Canyon and the spectacular rock bluffs located high above the river. Rock climbing and mountain biking are other favorite activities allowed in the forest. The best time to hike this trail is late September to early October when the fall colors are at their peak. The host of colors on the opposite escarpment at the end of the trail is truly a sight to behold. Special attractions: A great rock outcrop overlooking the Cheat River. See also this link.

Laurel Canyon A 435 acre geological park featuring Pennsylvania's largest cave. The cave temperature is 52 degrees year round so a sweater or jacket should be worn. The staff-directed caving trip permits the visitor to see over two miles of cave covering both the undeveloped cave and the lighted portion. The trip takes about three hours. Most of the passages are between ten and forty feet high. It is suggested that the physically challenged carefully consider the strenuous and challenging nature of the cave. On this exploring adventure there is much climbing up and over rocks. Injuries can occur from this kind of climbing and participants must sign a release form.

Deep Creek Lake Located in the mountains of western Maryland, about 15 miles from interstate 68. Deep Creek Lake offers a wide variety of out door recreational activities. Wisp Mountain Resort, located just north of Deep Creek, overs a wide variety of summer activities: if you can climb it, swim it, ride it, row it, hike it, fish it or fly it, Wisp Outdoors has it. Take the ride of your life on a mountain board down the Wisp slopes or in a kayak on Deep Creek Lake.
