I knew being a mountaineer would be a great opportunity and I would feel like part of the mountaineer family. I chose to go to the program at Keyser Campus because it was close to my family.
\r\n
Why did you choose Nursing as a profession?
\r\n
I chose nursing because of my father. He had two heart attacks and right then I knew I wanted a profession in the medical field to help people. I chose nursing in the medical field because of the compassion nurses have and the opportunities nursing can offer to grow into new fields.
\r\n
Did you have an “a-ha!” moment when they knew they knew this was the right major for you?
\r\n
During my clinicals I had many patients tell me that I was doing well and they looked forward to seeing me graduate and start practicing as a nurse. As I continued to hear patient compliments and started to be able to do clinical activities well, I knew this is where I belonged.
\r\n
What piece of advice would you give to the incoming class?
\r\n
Don’t give up. You can do this. It may be hard and frustrating. You may not feel like it is worth it but I promise you it is. Start studying early and take breaks. Reward yourself and make sure you take time to destress. After you accomplish your first IV or hear your patient thank you, you will know it is worth it in the end.
\r\n
Why should a potential nursing student choose the WVU School of Nursing?
\r\n
WVU is great at making sure the students have what they need. On the Keyser Campus, all of the professors care and will go out of their way to help you. Everyone is so kind. I felt like I mattered and wasn’t just another nursing student.
\r\n
Where are you off to next? Do you have a job lined up?
\r\n
I accepted a job at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. I’ll start working on Medsurg and then go to the Emergency Department. Eventually, I am going back to school to be a nurse practitioner. Hopefully I’ll start the NP program at WVU.
","fullName":"Ashley Thompson","campus":748,"pullQuote":"WVU is great at making sure the students have what they need. These courses are taken in conjunction with nursing clinical courses. Students apply their learning to actual client, family and community situations that warrant nursing intervention. In keeping with the University's commitment to improving health care for all West Virginians, all health sciences students complete a rural clinical practice as part of the degree requirements. Nursing students complete rural clinical practice experience during their senior year.
\r\n
Throughout the academic and clinical experiences, students will focus on the five core competencies that provide the framework for the BSN curriculum, including critical thinking, nursing interventions, professional role, caring, and communication which are outlined in more detail in our Student Handbook.
\r\n
Want to learn more about our BSN program? Watch this recording from a recent BSN virtual open house.
\r\n
Progression Plans
\r\n
Depending on when you are admitted to the BSN program, the progression plan you follow in your time at WVU can vary slightly. The BSN program is six semesters of clinical nursing courses after completion of all pre-requisite courses.
\r\n
Simulation Experience
\r\n
We offer the opportunity for students to learn in two state-of-the-art simulation facilities where students practice patient care without fear of jeopardizing patient safety.
\r\n
View Our Facilities
\r\n
HSC Student Laptop Computer Program
\r\n
As a student entering the BSN program at the sophomore level in the WVU School of Nursing, you will be among a group of students participating in the WVU Health Sciences Student Computer Program. You will have access to computer resources to assist you in your studies, including a personal laptop computer, software, access to the Internet and to resources within the University, and on-site computer support. Direct admit freshman and pre-nursing students do not participate in the Computer Program until they are enrolled in the first semester of nursing courses in the sophomore year.
\r\n
The laptop to be distributed is chosen by the School based on current nursing student feedback, faculty input and members of the Health Sciences Student Laptop Committee. This computer will cost each student a one-time payment in full at the beginning of the first semester in which the student enters the nursing program with the laptop being retained by the student upon graduation. The fee will be a separate line item on the student account and will be in addition to the tuition and fees. The cost of this required program is a recognized educational requirement and is included in financial aid calculations.
\r\n
The laptop is used for testing as well as completion of course work in many of the nursing courses throughout the BSN curriculum. In order to better serve our students, the HSC ITS department provides on-site computer support day of testing should the need arise. WVU is great at making sure the students have what they need. On the Keyser Campus, all of the professors care and will go out of their way to help you.

Why did you choose the WVU School of Nursing?

I chose WVU School of Nursing because I wanted to be part of the mountaineer family. I knew being a mountaineer would be a great opportunity and I would feel like part of the mountaineer family. I chose to go to the program at Keyser Campus because it was close to my family.

Why did you choose Nursing as a profession?

I chose nursing because of my father. He had two heart attacks and right then I knew I wanted a profession in the medical field to help people. I chose nursing in the medical field because of the compassion nurses have and the opportunities nursing can offer to grow into new fields.

Did you have an “a-ha!” moment when they knew they knew this was the right major for you?

During my clinicals I had many patients tell me that I was doing well and they looked forward to seeing me graduate and start practicing as a nurse. As I continued to hear patient compliments and started to be able to do clinical activities well, I knew this is where I belonged.

What piece of advice would you give to the incoming class?

Don’t give up. You can do this. It may be hard and frustrating. You may not feel like it is worth it but I promise you it is. Start studying early and take breaks. Reward yourself and make sure you take time to destress. After you accomplish your first IV or hear your patient thank you, you will know it is worth it in the end.

Why should a potential nursing student choose the WVU School of Nursing?

WVU is great at making sure the students have what they need. On the Keyser Campus, all of the professors care and will go out of their way to help you. Everyone is so kind. I felt like I mattered and wasn’t just another nursing student.

Where are you off to next? Do you have a job lined up?

I accepted a job at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. I’ll start working on Medsurg and then go to the Emergency Department. Eventually, I am going back to school to be a nurse practitioner. Hopefully I’ll start the NP program at WVU.

Let’s go.
