Samantha Manson

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
School of Pharmacy

Where is your Hometown?

Clarksburg, WV

Were you a Direct Admit Pathway (DAP) student, or did you have a degree before entering the WVU School of Pharmacy?

I was a DAP.

Why did you choose to be a pharmacist?

I had always wanted to be involved in the medical field. My initial plan was to become a pediatrician, but after attending the National Academy of Future Physician Congress of Future Medical Leaders during my sophomore year of high school, my thoughts on that plan changed. After a couple of google searches for “best medical careers,” each list I stumbled upon listed “pharmacist” in one of the top spots. I began to research what a pharmacy career path might look like. Knowing that I wanted a career where I could truly help people while building upon my love of science, the rest was history. Now that I am almost a practicing pharmacist, I am so happy that my path led me to where I am today. There is so much more to being a pharmacist than meets the eye, and I have learned that through four years of professor mentorship, rotation experiences and peer networking.

Why did you choose West Virginia University?

As someone born and raised in West Virginia, coming to WVU was the obvious choice. Once I took a tour of the campus and learned how great the pharmacy program was at WVU, my choice solidified. I am now leaving WVU with lifelong friends and memories that will last forever!

What is your favorite memory of WVU or the School of Pharmacy School?

There are too many to count, but singing “Country Roads” after a Mountaineer victory is a feeling that can’t be beaten! A close second would have to be spending five weeks in Anchorage, Alaska, for one of my Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations, which is one of the many opportunities I am grateful to have experienced through the WVU School of Pharmacy.

What advice do you have for someone considering WVU for Pharmacy School?

Come see what pharmacy school at WVU is all about! The staff, students and alumni, are amazing and always willing to share advice, words of encouragement and other helpful insights to make the decision easier. The world of pharmacy is ever-changing, and with so many different paths to take, there is sure to be something that suits your passion and interests. As a wise professor once told my class, “Most of the careers you and your peers will have in the future do not even exist yet!” A career in pharmacy can be whatever you would like it to be, and we are evolving into new and exciting roles each and every day.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will begin my residency at WVU Medicine Allied Health Solutions Specialty Pharmacy in Morgantown, WV.

Let’s go.
