One of the biggest being that my dad is a WVU Alumni. Also, WVU is only a short one hour and 15-minute drive from my hometown! It also helps that the WVU campus and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful.</p>\r\n<h2>Why did you choose the WVU School of Nursing?</h2>\r\n<p>I picked WVU SON because I immediately fell in love when I had my first visit to the Health Sciences campus. The opportunity to have all of my clinical rotations at one incredible hospital, J.W. Ruby Memorial, paired with the state-of-the-art STEPS Center for simulation made me super excited to start learning here. The professors I met on my first tour were so kind and passionate about nursing! I realized that WVU SON was the right place for me after that day<strong>. </strong></p>\r\n<h2>Why did you choose Nursing as a profession?</h2>\r\n<p>I chose nursing as a profession for a multitude of reasons. One of the more basic reasons was because of my love of science classes in high school, like Anatomy &amp; Physiology. The most important reason I chose nursing was because I spent the majority of my time in high school caring for my grandfather who was fighting colorectal cancer. I definitely had little- to-no medical knowledge at that time, but when I visited him in the hospital or at home when home health visited I was amazed by the skill, compassion and intelligence of each nurse who cared for him. I knew that I wanted to be the difference in somebody’s worst days, just like Pap’s best nurses were. I truly believe that nurses are special people; I am so happy that I will get to make meaningful impacts on so many lives in the near future.</p>\r\n<h2>Did you have an “a-ha!” moment when they knew they knew this was the right major for you?</h2>\r\n<p>I was so excited about being a nursing major even before I had my first nursing class. Still, I think the clearest moment that I was in the right place happened very recently. I was caring for an older gentleman who was recovering from an open heart surgery. He was very kind to me and very appreciative of anything I did for him, even a gesture as small as bringing creamer for his coffee. Later in the shift, he was on the phone with his wife when I came in to scan off some medications. He asked me if I could take a moment to talk to her. I told him I would. It turns out that she just wanted to express how appreciative she was of me and the other nurses who were caring for her husband. She even became tearful speaking of her gratitude, and I might have had some tears well up in my eyes as well. Her appreciation for the work I was doing reassured me that being a nurse is exactly what I should be.</p>\r\n<h2>What piece of advice would you give to the incoming class?</h2>\r\n<p>One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to work hard, ask lots of questions and always take opportunities to try new skills! I was definitely nervous my first few clinical days, as I’m sure you will be too, but I am sure you will realize that you are very prepared to take care of your patients from all of the didactic work you’ve completed prior. You’ll also find that the nurses are very enthusiastic and are always prepared to help you.</p>\r\n<h2>Why should a potential nursing student choose the WVU School of Nursing? </h2>\r\n<p>I could name so many reasons to choose WVU SON! Nursing students at WVU have the opportunity to learn at the #1 hospital in the state, J.W. Ruby Memorial. Each floor of the hospital has incredible learning opportunities from pediatrics to geriatrics and more. In addition, all of the staff in the school of nursing are incredibly supportive, kind and determined to help you become a great nurse. The STEPS Center makes learning difficult skills less intimidating because of the high-tech equipment and mannequins. Most importantly, you will find a tight knit community of other nursing students that will make WVU feel like a second home.</p>\r\n<h2>Where are you off to next? Do you have a job lined up?</h2>\r\n<p>I am so excited to begin my nursing career at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)! I intend to continue my employment at the Monongalia County Health Department as well.</p>","fullName":"Sarah Cain","campus":746,"pullQuote":"The opportunity to have all of my clinical rotations at one incredible hospital, J.W. These courses are taken in conjunction with nursing clinical courses. Students apply their learning to actual client, family and community situations that warrant nursing intervention. In keeping with the University's commitment to improving health care for all West Virginians, all health sciences students complete a rural clinical practice as part of the degree requirements. Nursing students complete rural clinical practice experience during their senior year.</p>\r\n<p>Throughout the academic and clinical experiences, students will focus on the five core competencies that provide the framework for the BSN curriculum, including critical thinking, nursing interventions, professional role, caring, and communication which are outlined in more detail in our <a data-id=\"1945\" href=\"/students/resources/student-handbooks/\" title=\"Student Handbooks\">Student Handbook</a>. </p>\r\n<p>Want to learn more about our BSN program? You will have access to computer resources to assist you in your studies, including a personal laptop computer, software, access to the Internet and to resources within the University, and on-site computer support.  Direct admit freshman and pre-nursing students do not participate in the Computer Program until they are enrolled in the first semester of nursing courses in the sophomore year.</p>\r\n<p>The laptop to be distributed is chosen by the School based on current nursing student feedback, faculty input and members of the Health Sciences Student Laptop Committee. This computer will cost each student a one-time payment in full at the beginning of the first semester in which the student enters the nursing program with the laptop being retained by the student upon graduation. The fee will be a separate line item on the student account and will be in addition to the tuition and fees. The cost of this required program is a recognized educational requirement and is included in financial aid calculations.</p>\r\n<p>The laptop is used for testing as well as completion of course work in many of the nursing courses throughout the BSN curriculum. The opportunity to have all of my clinical rotations at one incredible hospital, J.W. Ruby Memorial, paired with the state-of-the-art STEPS Center for simulation made me super excited to start learning here.

Why did you choose to come to WV for nursing school?

I decided to come to WVU for several reasons. One of the biggest being that my dad is a WVU Alumni. Also, WVU is only a short one hour and 15-minute drive from my hometown! It also helps that the WVU campus and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful.

Why did you choose the WVU School of Nursing?

I picked WVU SON because I immediately fell in love when I had my first visit to the Health Sciences campus. The opportunity to have all of my clinical rotations at one incredible hospital, J.W. Ruby Memorial, paired with the state-of-the-art STEPS Center for simulation made me super excited to start learning here. The professors I met on my first tour were so kind and passionate about nursing! I realized that WVU SON was the right place for me after that day.

Why did you choose Nursing as a profession?

I chose nursing as a profession for a multitude of reasons. One of the more basic reasons was because of my love of science classes in high school, like Anatomy & Physiology. I truly believe that nurses are special people; I am so happy that I will get to make meaningful impacts on so many lives in the near future.

Did you have an “a-ha!” moment when they knew they knew this was the right major for you?

I was so excited about being a nursing major even before I had my first nursing class. Her appreciation for the work I was doing reassured me that being a nurse is exactly what I should be.

What piece of advice would you give to the incoming class?

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to work hard, ask lots of questions and always take opportunities to try new skills! I was definitely nervous my first few clinical days, as I’m sure you will be too, but I am sure you will realize that you are very prepared to take care of your patients from all of the didactic work you’ve completed prior. You’ll also find that the nurses are very enthusiastic and are always prepared to help you.

Why should a potential nursing student choose the WVU School of Nursing?

I could name so many reasons to choose WVU SON! Most importantly, you will find a tight knit community of other nursing students that will make WVU feel like a second home.

Where are you off to next? Do you have a job lined up?

I am so excited to begin my nursing career at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)! I intend to continue my employment at the Monongalia County Health Department as well.

Let’s go.
