SPH offering course on quality assessment and patient safety

Beginning this fall, the SPH Department of Health Policy, Management and Leadership will offer a new course titled Quality Assessment and Patient Safety (HPML 693A: CRN 88814).

This course is designed as an introduction to quality assessment and patient safety in healthcare organizations. The course examines the definition of quality in healthcare from the perspectives of providers, health plans and consumers. Healthcare standards of JCAHO, NCQA and HEDIS are reviewed. The role of clinical pathways, outcome measures, technology and the internet are explored as they impact the quality of healthcare. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a framework to assess traditional, current and anticipated future approaches to the improvement of quality (and patient safety) in American healthcare.

For more information on the course, please contact Department Chair Nicholas Castle at nicholas.castle@hsc.wvu.edu.
