CAMC/WVU Resident Daniel Cho named President and Chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s APA/APAF Leadership Fellowship

 

Daniel Cho, M.D., M.P.H. a resident in the CAMC/WVU internal medicine/psychiatry program at Charleston Area Medical has been named president and chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s APA/APAF Leadership Fellowship. This is a program aimed at developing national leaders in the field of organized psychiatry, by offering psychiatry trainees opportunities to interact with national thought leaders in the field, and to further develop their professional leadership skills, networks and psychiatric experience.

Fellowship recipients have opportunities to expand relationships with peers and connect with mentors in order to grow themselves and the field of psychiatry. Many APA/APAF Leadership Fellowship graduates have become nationally prominent psychiatrists, assuming leadership roles in APA/APAF organizations and other reputable societies.

Dr. Cho was one of 10 residents chosen last year by the American Psychiatric Association as “Leadership Fellows”, an honor that signifies that each successful nominee has a future as a leader in the field. Elected for a two year term, the 10 second year fellows in the now advanced group elect one of their number President and Chair of the combined cohort of 20 future leaders in American psychiatry, and his peers elected Dr. Cho.

“Dr. Cho’s recognition is a considerable honor for the CAMC/WVU Behavioral Medicine Residency Program and the WVU Charleston Campus,” said Dr. John Linton, Associate Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean of the WVU School of Medicine’s Charleston Campus. “Not only was Dan chosen by the APA national committee in his first year, his nine second-year cohort peers selected him as the leader of the entire fellowship group for the next year. This is a praiseworthy accomplishment.”

Funded by APA Foundation, the APA/APAF Leadership Fellowship screens applicants using an extensive list of requirements, as well as demonstrated attributes in areas including

  • Demonstrated leadership in psychiatric and/or other medical pursuits prior to and during residency, including any community and/or regional leadership activities

  • Involvement in components and/or activities in residency training program, hospital, university, APA (including District Branches), state/national psychiatric organizations, other medical organizations and/or within the community

  • Confirmed academic accomplishment in research and publication prior to or during residency training

  • Demonstrated academic accomplishment teaching residents, medical students and/or the community, with evidence of excellence such as awards, notable feedback and/or other recognition. This includes presentations at departmental grand rounds
