Director of National Cancer Institute to speak on campus on Thursday

Norman E. "Ned" Sharpless, MD, director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), will present "The Power of Research, The Promise of Hope" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, as part of the WVU Cancer Institute's Hardesty Lecture series.

The presentation will take place in the Okey Patteson Auditorium, located on the first floor of the WVU Health Sciences Center. The lecture is open to faculty, staff, and students. The lecture will also be webcast at: http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/webcast.

Dr. Sharpless became the NCI's 15th director in 2017. Prior to his appointment, he served as the director of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Sharpless has made seminal contributions to the understanding of the relationship between aging and cancer, and in the pre-clinical development of novel therapeutics for melanoma, lung cancer, and breast cancer.

The Hardesty Lecture was established in honor of former WVU President David C. Hardesty, Jr., and his wife, Susan Brown Hardesty. The series brings renowned cancer scientists and physicians to the WVU campus.
