Employees can access free tickets to Hot Rod Hundley documentary

Employees are invited to the premier of "Hot Rod The Documentary, the Untold Story of Hot Rod Hundley," a film about legendary WVU basketball player Rod "Hot Rod" Hundley Friday, March 30, at the Metropolitan Theatre on High Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m.

WVU Medicine is a sponsor of the documentary and the event. The documentary is a production of Pikewood Creative.

The film chronicles the flamboyant life of basketball great Hundley, an unforgettable player and broadcaster, who used the game to achieve heights absolutely no one could have imagined.

Hundley was raised by various families in Charleston, W.Va. By the time he was in high school, he lived by himself. He rose to prominence as one of the most flamboyant players in basketball history. Known as "the Clown Prince," he became the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.

His lifestyle saw his pro career end prematurely. Realizing a missed opportunity he dedicated himself to broadcasting. He is the only former player in NBA history to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a play-by-play announcer.

The story not only documents his rags to riches life, but how the darkness of his childhood never left him. He died in March 2015 of Alzheimer’s.
