Heart devices topic of community seminar

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – February is National Heart Month. WVU Medicine East and the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center Eastern Division will sponsor a community mini-medical school program on cardiac devices.

The seminar titled Tick-Tock…How We Keep the Heart Beating will be held on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center on the Berkeley Medical Center campus.

Guest speakers Cathy Funk, M.D., internist, and Ajay Virmani, M.D., cardiologist, will discuss the symptoms and scenarios for cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. Attendees will learn about the reason and diagnosis for devices, how they are implanted, follow-up and living with a device.

Registration for the mini-medical school program begins at 6:30 p.m. with the program to follow at 7 p.m. Equipment representatives will be onsite with displays of cardiac devices to see and touch. Attendees will receive a free cardiac information booklet.

The mini-medical school program is being offered free to the public as a community service of WVU Medicine and the WVU Health Sciences Center Eastern Division.
