Joint Commission to survey Stroke Center Oct. 16-17
The WVU Medicine Stroke Center is scheduled for a Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Certification survey on Monday, Oct. 16, and Tuesday, Oct. 17. The survey will be conducted by two surveyors. All hospital areas where stroke patients are cared for may be involved.
In preparation for the visit, there will be a mock survey on Tuesday, Sept. 26, conducted by the Stroke Center staff, representatives from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and volunteers from a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Some areas of interest include:
- location and use of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs)
- appropriate assessments and re-assessments
- post-procedure care for IV tPA, thrombectomy, clipping, coiling, and carotid procedures
- appropriate blood pressure goals
- aspiration screening for all neuro patients
- progression of patient education on stroke and risk factors
- documenting and finding documentation in the patient record

Comprehensive is the highest of three stroke designations certified by the Joint Commission. A Comprehensive Stroke Center must meet standards for the most complex stroke cases and be prepared 365 days a year to deliver advanced stroke care. Successfully passing this survey is the final hurdle to WVU Medicine becoming the first and only certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in West Virginia.
