MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Organizers of the 2nd annual Just Desserts fundraiser hope to satisfy every sweet tooth, while raising money for brain cancer research at the WVU Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.

Hosted by the Let the Journey Begin Fund Committee at the Cancer Center, Just Desserts starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at St. John University Parish in Morgantown. Admission is $30 per person if purchased in advance and $35 per person at the door and includes various types of desserts, entertainment, silent and live auction items and more.

The Let the Journey Begin Fund was created at the Cancer Center in 2011 by Erin “Poppy” Polak after her aunt, Erin Dunmire, who is director of customer service at WVU Healthcare, was diagnosed with brain cancer. The name of the fund was inspired by Dunmire, who always told Polak that life is a journey and to enjoy the moments.

In just one year, Polak, her family and friends raised $25,000 by selling bracelets, T-shirts and other items bearing her aunt’s quote. The amount was enough to endow the Let the Journey Begin Fund; and their continued efforts have put the Fund over the $70,000 mark. Monies in the fund will benefit brain cancer research and provide comfort care for adult brain cancer patients at the Cancer Center.

“We want to make a difference, so that brain cancer becomes a chronic, not a fatal disease,” said Dunmire.
