Kennedy-Rea earns HSC Vice President's award for outstanding achievement in service

As part of the WVU Health Sciences Vice President's Achievement Awards celebration, a faculty member from the WVU Cancer Institute was honored for their work. Stephenie Kennedy-Rea E.D. was presented with the Vice President’s Scholar Award for service. The awards ceremony was held Wednesday, April 10, 2019

Kennedy-Rea is Associate Director for Cancer Prevention and Control at WVU Cancer Institute

The Vice President’s Achievement Awards are bestowed annually on people and groups who have made significant contributions to the missions of the University and their schools and units. Winners were nominated by their peers and selected by the Achievement Awards committees.

"Dr. Kennedy-Rea works tirelessly in service to our staff, our students, the WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI), Health Sciences Center (HSC), and West Virginia University (WVU) leadership as well as to the citizens of our state. Her reputation for excellence, leadership, scholarship, and service is exceptional," said Amy R. Allen, assistant director for Cancer Prevention and Control at WVU Cancer Institute, "Stephenie has been a shining light in the field of cancer prevention and control for almost twenty years."

Dr. Kennedy-Rea's work has focused on reducing the cancer burden at the community level and she promotes evidence-based early detection, outreach, and educational interventions. Her backgrounds in biology, counseling, and education have provided her with tools that allow her to help implement population-based interventions that reach a large number of people. She specializes in cancer health disparities outreach that includes health literacy; Appalachian culture; breast, cervical, lung and colorectal cancers; and reaching rural, medically underserved populations
