Mon Health System, WVUH Reach Compromise in Expansion

Hearing With Health Care Authority Cancelled

West Virginia University Hospitals and Monongalia Health System have reached a settlement that will allow WVUH to move forward with its major expansion project.

The parties mutually agreed to cancel the public hearing with the Health Care Authority on Tuesday, in Charleston, following negotiations last week.

Mon General Hospital, and its parent, Mon Health System, withdrew its request for a hearing, as WVUH elected to reduce its proposed expansion from 139 beds in its new patient tower to 114 beds, which will result in a savings of at least $20 million on the original $248 million project.

During the negotiations, the two entities also resolved to explore future cooperative clinical and programmatic opportunities to benefit the community at large. Possible future areas of cooperation include efforts to provide more efficient patient care, assure clinical coverage and support healthcare professions training.
