Last month, the WVU Medicine Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center honored three patients during the ninth annual Night of Recognition.
The WVU Medicine Marketing and Communications Department produced three videos that tell the patients' stories, two of which are available to the public.
James "Colton" Lowery, a 16-year-old from Beckley, was involved in a motocross wreck in July, causing him to be rushed into critical care after his leg was caught in the back tire of his dirt bike. One recommended course of action was to amputate the leg above the knee but Lowery was moved to the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center where he underwent multiple surgeries to repair the leg. He has had 16 surgeries so far and spent nearly two months in J.W. Ruby Memrorial Hospital but his leg has been saved. See Lowery’s story here.
Steven Rhodes, a rig operator from Ravenswood, was involved in an early morning car accident that caused severe injuries and trauma. He suffered from a brain injury, along with fractures to the bones of his face, his spine, and numerous other broken bones throughout his body. Also, his lungs were collapsed and not providing his blood stream with oxygen. Rhodes was in Ruby Memorial for 72 days, most of them in a coma, but made steady progress toward recovery.
