Recognizing the Outstanding Accomplishments of Women Faculty and Staff at the West Virginia University Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Deadline: Monday, March 28, 2016
The Women in Science & Health Awards are sponsored by the Women in Science & Health (WISH) Committee to recognize outstanding achievements by women at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center (HSC) of West Virginia University. Appropriate nominees should be characterized by a demonstration of commitment to diversity, education, mentorship, service to WV, leadership, research, and HSC mission. Women who are currently employed or are retired members of the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center are eligible for nomination. Recommendations from trainees or students from all HSC schools are encouraged.
In 2016 there will be an Advanced Career Excellence Award and a Mid-Career Excellence Award. See linked evaluation forms for descriptions and review criteria for these two different awards.
Nomination Procedures
The Nomination Package should include (electronic submission only):
• One (1) nomination letter, setting forth in detail the contribution(s) to the field (s) that represent(s) the nominee’s outstanding achievements as documented by demonstration of all of the following:
o Diversity (i.e.: examples of research or service activities addressing the support of minority or under-represented groups in the HSC and/or in the state)
o Education (didactic and clinical teaching)
o Mentorship (i.e. training and support of individual students outside of traditional educational responsibilities, providing support for colleagues, fostering community engagement….)
o Service to West Virginia (i.e. patient care, community health promotion and disease prevention efforts, educational outreach, resource networking and dissemination)
o Leadership (i.e. examples of the candidate’s capacity to work creatively & constructively, and across disciplinary boundaries).
o Commitment to Research (this may include leadership in specific research agendas or active support of the research of others)
o Commitment to WVU Health Sciences Center mission

Elizabeth Scharman, PharmD honored with 2015
Women in Science & Health Advanced Career Excellence Award
Elizabeth J. Scharman, PharmD, ABAT, BCPS, FAACT has been honored with the 2015 WVU HSC Women in Science and Health Advanced Career Excellence Award. This award recognizes the career achievements of advanced women faculty/staff in the WVU Health Sciences Center who demonstrate excellence in WVU HSC missions of education, leadership, diversity, scholarship, service to West Virginia and research. Dr. Scharman is a tenured Professor in the WVU School of Pharmacy Department of Clinical Pharmacy at West Virginia University. She received her B.S. in Pharmacy from Butler University and a PharmD. from Virginia Commonwealth University (Medical College of Virginia) then completed a Clinical Toxicology Fellowship at the Pittsburgh Poison Center/University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Scharman is the Director of the West Virginia Poison Center; a position she has held since July 1992. Her national reputation increased following the hazardous chemical leak into the water supply in southern West Virginia in 2014. Dr. Scharman also serves as the Deputy Strategic National Stockpile Coordinator for West Virginia and she is involved in multiple disaster related projects in West Virginia including being an active member and past Chair of the Kanawha/Putnam Emergency Planning Committee. Dr. Scharman was selected by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology as the 2012 Distinguished Service Award recipient for outstanding and extraordinary service to the organization over the years of her professional career. Her research focus involves evidence-based evaluations of clinical toxicology practice. She is also lauded for her effective teaching to WVU and other health career students as well as state medical professionals about disaster-planning and response.
Lesley Cottrell, PHD honored with 2015
Women in Science & Health Mid-Career Excellence Award
Lesley E. Cottrell, PHD has been honored with the 2015 WVU HSC Women in Science and Health Mid-Career Excellence Award. This new award recognizes the career achievements of mid-career women faculty/staff in the WVU Health Sciences Center who demonstrate excellence in mentorship, leadership, diversity service, research and education. Dr. Cottrell is an Associate Professor/ Vice Chair for Research, WVU SOM Department of Pediatrics and is also Co-Director of the WVU School of Public Health’s Prevention Research Center. . She completed her master’s degree in Child Clinical Psychology and a doctorate in Developmental Psychology from WVU.
Dr. Cottrell is currently the Principal Investigator for the National Children’s Study Location in Marion County, West Virginia. She has ongoing funded research for the Cardiovascular Risk Detection Screening Program for Children in Underserved, Rural Areas: The CARDIAC Project. Her research activities examine parental influences on child and adolescent health risk decision making and behaviors. Her own research specifically examines parental monitoring with regard to the development of child and adolescent risk behaviors. This research endeavor has produced a comprehensive parental monitoring inventory as well as a parent-adolescent monitoring program. Other WVU SOM/SOP activities include faculty research mentorship, medical student training and Vice Chair of the WVU Institutional Review Board-Gold Team.
