PRESIDENT'S CORNER: March 11, 2016

Yet More News…

  • The Director Search Committee (Craig, Davidson, Martin, Rogers, Rudy & Me) had a very productive interview session on Tuesday morning with our 4 finalists. Because of confidentiality policy, I will tell you that we are proceeding on to the next step, personal interviews, over the next two weeks.  We hope to have a decision by the end of March. Each candidate was asked the same set of questions, all of us participating and listening and taking notes.
  • We’re beginning to plan for the spring pre-term event and for the Annual Meeting. It appears that we may have the Annual Meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Start City, but stay tuned. Judy and her committee are on the case!
  • I now have heard from at least 3 Film Forum fans that have never seen “Victor Victoria.” Quite a shock to my system, since it’s one of my favorites. If you are included, I urge you to get yourself to Classroom A next Wednesday, March 16 at 3 PM. Trust me, you have NEVER seen Julie Andrews or Robert Preston like this! It is a musical comedy, by the way and there is a scene with a cockroach that will never leave you, if you survive the laughter.
  • On a less happy note, a wave of flu has stricken the cast of “Courtship/Valentine’s Day” at the WVU School of Theater.  They have had to cancel two performances, but hope to be back up tonight and they have added a Saturday matinee and our Sunday show should be OK. We’ll let you know if anything changes.
  • Isn’t there some event happening Saturday night…or is it at 2 AM on Sunday…oh, yeah, make sure to SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD AN HOUR…daylight time is back! If you’re late for religious services, shame on you!
  • I’d also like to give you early warning about THREE Met/Opera in HD operas in April, every other week. “Madama Butterfly” on April 2 at 1 PM (3 hrs 40 min); “Roberto Devereux” on April 16 at 1 PM (3 hrs 30 min); and “Elektra” on April 30 at 1 PM (2 hrs 10 min). Will we all have to take out loans?

OK, here come the quips!

You’re never too old to become younger. [Mae West]

Interviewer: To what do you attribute your longevity? Chef Julia Child: Red meat and gin.

I live by one principle: Enjoy life with no conditions! People say, “If I had your health, if I had your money, oh, I would enjoy myself.” It is not true. I would be happy if I were lying sick in a hospital bed. It must come from the inside. That is the one thing I hope to have contributed to my children, by example and by talk: to make no conditions, to understand that life is a wonderful thing and to enjoy it, every day, to the full. [Musician Artur Rubenstein]
