Safety Town has another successful year at WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital

GLEN DALE, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital celebrated another successful year of Safety Town with the graduation of the 2018 class.

Safety Town, a two-week course designed to teach four- and five-year-olds basic safety precautions, has been taught by the Reynolds Marketing and Communications Department, a City of Glen Dale police officer, students from the B.M. Spurr School of Practical Nursing, and Reynolds Volunteens for more than 30 years.

“Reynolds employees look forward to Safety Town every year,” Megan Denny, Safety Town instructor, said. “It’s a joy to see the kids around the hospital having fun while learning important lessons on how they can stay safe in a variety of situations.”

Students of the 2018 class met with many community leaders for safety lessons. Students got to know local police officers and EMS crews while touring a police cruiser, ambulance, and the HealthNet helicopter. Firefighters brought by a fire truck and taught a lesson on fire safety inside the Fire Safety House.

The Marshall County Schools Transportation Department stopped by with Buster the Bus to teach the kids about bus safety before transporting them to Glen Dale City Park for a lesson on playground safety. Additionally, the students learned animal safety with guests from the Marshall County Animal Shelter and dental hygiene with the Marshall County Health Department. The class of 2018 even had a surprise visit from Spike, the Wheeling Nailers mascot.

Each student received a bicycle helmet donated by The Health Plan and a graduation T-shirt, sponsored by local State Farm agents Lori Grisell, Mike McCoy, and Taylor Shepherd.

Student applications for the next Safety Town course will be available in June 2019.
