School of Dentistry admissions hosts 38 for Destination Dentistry

The West Virginia University School of Dentistry had overwhelming interest in an annual spring event to give undergraduate students a feel for what dental school entails.

Dr. Shelia S. Price, Associate Dean of Admissions, Recruitment and Access and her office hosts the annual Destination Dentistry workshop to guide pre-dental students on a successful journey into dental school.

A total of 38 workshop participants represented six universities and 10 West Virginia counties at the Saturday, April 21, 2018 informational forum.

Over the course of eight hours, five faculty members and 14 current student ambassadors shared reminders, answered questions, conducted hands-on activities and guided tours of the school.

It can be intensely competitive to be admitted to the School of Dentistry with 1,200 or more applicants vying for 48 positions in a class.

“We aim to optimize their awareness of what it takes to earn the opportunity to advance from applicant to dental student. The workshop is designed to provide navigational tips that will ultimately help students arrive to their desired destination – a career in dentistry,” Price explained.

Destination Dentistry includes a content-rich, fast paced forum allowing participants to learn about oral health and overall health interconnections through activities in the school’s simulation lab.

The day begins with an overview of the Doctor of Dental Surgery program that includes information on admissions from how to apply to when to apply for dental school. It ends with information on applications and financial aid.
