WVU Cancer Institute Berkeley Medical Center offers mammography clinics

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.

The best way to reduce breast cancer deaths is early detection. Clinical breast exams, breast self-exams, and mammograms can save lives. To promote the importance of prevention and early detection, the WVU Cancer Institute will offer discount mammogram clinics at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg.

The 3D tomo digital mammography screening clinics will be held each Saturday in May at the Berkeley Medical Center Women’s Imaging Center, 880 Tennessee Avenue MOB3. All screenings will be scheduled beginning at 8 a.m.

3D breast tomo is the latest breast in cancer screening and diagnostic technology. This  technology gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. Images are used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

Mammograms will be offered to women 35 years old or older at a discounted community service fee of $60, payable by cash, check or credit card, which includes the test and the interpretation by a radiologist.

Although a physician’s order is not required to participate in the mammogram clinics, any patients without a physician will be assigned a physician to receive the test results. All patients participating in the screening mammogram clinics must register in advance by calling 844-802-2734, option 2.

Limited funding is available through the WVU Medicine University Healthcare Foundation Cancer Comfort Fund for individuals who cannot afford the $60 fee. Criteria must be met in order to be eligible for this funding. For more information, call 304-264-1223.
