WVU Medicine affiliate recognized by publication

Of the roughly 650 Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) across the country, ACO West Virginia, an affiliate of WVU Medicine, has been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as one of 144 “ACOs to Know” for 2018.

ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers that come together voluntarily to give coordinated, high-quality care to their Medicare patients. The goal of coordinated care is to ensure that patients, especially the chronically ill, get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors. When an ACO succeeds both in delivering high-quality care and spending healthcare dollars more wisely, it will share in the savings it achieves for the Medicare program.

“The creation and expansion of ACO West Virginia represents an important step in our path to value-based reimbursement and patient-centered care across all of WVU Medicine,” said Ben Gerber, WVU Medicine’s vice president of payer strategy and contracting.

WVU Medicine formed ACO West Virginia in 2017 and began participation in the Medicare Shared Savings Program on Jan. 1. On Jan. 1, 2019, ACO West Virginia will expand to include all current WVU Medicine hospitals and physician groups.
