A message from Dr. Phil Saul

Dear WVU Medicine and WVU Health Sciences colleagues:

I’ve got three predictions for West Virginia University’s Oct. 14 Homecoming game:

First, the Mountaineers will beat our opponent, Texas Tech, and continue to battle for a Big 12 title.

Second, our alumni and the rest of our raucous home crowd will see signs of WVU Medicine and WVU Medicine Children’s EVERYWHERE in and around Milan Puskar Stadium (more on that below).

And third, I foresee a tremendous outpouring of support for a big game-day initiative to help the patients and families at WVU Medicine Children’s.

A collection station will be set up in the grassy area outside the North Gate of the stadium, where we will be collecting the following new, unused items:

  • Small comfort blankets
  • Sippy cups
  • Pajamas in all sizes
  • Girls and boys underwear in all sizes

If you can’t make it to the game, Friends Gift Shop will also be collecting these items, starting today through Oct. 14 (game day).

We can always count on Mountaineer fans to rally around their team and rally around a great cause!

Inside the stadium, there will be multiple recognitions and activities for WVU Medicine Children’s. Before the game, some of our patients will tour the stadium and get to be on the field, watching the players warm up.

At the start of the game, a game ball will be dedicated to WVU Medicine Children’s. I will be joined by Jeff Hostetler to accept the ball on behalf of WVU Medicine Children’s.

Also, Adyson Stalder, one of our miracle patients will be the honorary captain and will be at mid-field for the coin toss. If you haven’t seen the video telling Adyson’s story, I highly recommend it. It is inspiring.

During the game, some of our patients and staff will be recognized on the field and more patients will be featured in a video on the scoreboard, leading a cheer of “Let’s Go, Mountaineers.”

Homecoming is a guaranteed good time for all – and you can make it even more special by helping our “little Mountaineers” and their families.
