WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center offers lactation consulting services

RANSON, W.Va. – Breastfeeding offers optimal nutrition to infants, but it can also be challenging at times. That’s why the Family Birthing Center at WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center offers a lactation consulting service designed to help new moms meet their breastfeeding goals.

Amy Blue, R.N., an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, established the service at Jefferson Medical Center in 2015, when she became certified. “Our service provides one-on-one instruction and support for new mothers following delivery,” Blue said, adding that both inpatient and outpatient lactation consulting services are currently available.

Blue has been a nurse at Jefferson Medical since 2006, and assists mothers with many issues related to nursing a child. “Breastfeeding is a learned skill for many families, and personal comfort levels may encourage or discourage the continuation of a breastfeeding relationship,” she said.

A lactation consultant assists in problem solving with mothers who are having difficulty nursing their children. They also keep current on evidence-based practices before giving advice on subjects such as supplementation, weaning, and weight gain.

The World Health Organization recommends that infants be breastfed exclusively for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development, and health. “An experienced lactation consultant supports your feeding choices and can make a huge difference in reaching your breastfeeding goals,” Blue added.
