WVU Medicine sponsors cooking demos, walk with a doc

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – WVU Medicine East, the WVU Medicine MedCHEFS and the WVU Medicine Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health are offering Walk with a Doc and cooking demos the third Saturday of each month in Jefferson County.

Walk with a Doc starts at 9 a.m. at the Charles Town Farmer’s Market and the MedCHEFS cooking demos start at 10 a.m. at Jefferson County Community Ministries (JCCM), located in downtown Charles Town. The next walk and cooking demo, featuring healthy summer recipes, will be held on June 15.

“The 30 minute walk will be at your own pace and all fitness levels are welcome to join us,” Madison Humerick, M.D., walk leader, said. “After the walk you can pick up some groceries at the farmer’s market and join us for the live cooking demo.”

At the cooking demo, join Dr. Humerick, Rosie Cannarella Lorenzetti, M.D., WVU medical students, and Scott Anderson, chef and co-owner of Community Garden Market in Shepherdstown, to learn healthy cooking techniques and taste the foods that are prepared. There will be a prize drawing and giveaways.

Clients of JCCM will receive a meal and bag of ingredients from the food pantry. Recipes highlighting foods available in the pantry will be offered. The cooking demo counts as one opportunity for JCCM clients.

This market season, the Charles Town Farmers Market will offer the Double Your SNAP Dollars Program from WV FresHealthy Bucks and the SNAP Stretch program. The market will now be able to triple the amount of SNAP purchases to allow customers to purchase even more fruits and vegetables. Plus, all children present are eligible to receive Kids Stretch bucks, making your SNAP dollar go even further.

The Double Your SNAP Dollars and SNAP Stretch programs will also be available this season at the Martinsburg Farmers Market which is held on Friday nights through the summer from 4:30 until 7 p.m.

The walk and cooking demo are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. JCCM is located at 238 W. Washington Street in Charles Town. For more information contact Nathan Fiore at 304-596-6323 or email nathan.fiore@wvumedicine.org.
