WVU Medicine sponsors walk with doc, cooking demos

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - WVU Medicine MedCHEFS and the WVU Medicine Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health will offer cooking demonstrations and Walk with a Doc the third Saturday of each month in Jefferson County.

Walk with a Doc starts at 9 a.m. at the Charles Town farmers market, followed by MedCHEFS cooking demos at 10 a.m. at Jefferson County Community Ministries, both located in downtown Charles Town. The 30 minute walk is at your own pace and open to all fitness levels.

“After the walk, you can pick up some local groceries and take advantage of the Double Your SNAP Dollars Program at the Charles Town Farmers Market,” Madison Humerick, M.D., walk leader, said.

Dr. Humerick, Rosie Cannarella Lorenzetti, M.D., WVU medical students, and Scott Anderson, chef and co-owner of Community Garden Market in Shepherdstown will provide healthy cooking demonstrations and community members will have the opportunity to taste the recipes. There will be a prize drawing and giveaways.

Clients of Jefferson County Community Ministries will receive a meal and bag of ingredients from the food pantry. Recipes highlighting foods available in the pantry will be offered. The cooking demonstration counts as one opportunity for Jefferson County Community Ministries clients.

The WVU MedCHEFS cooking demonstrations and Walk with a Doc are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Jefferson County Community Ministries is located at 238 West Washington Street in Charles Town.
