WVU Medicine University Healthcare benefits from 29th Annual Golf Classic

HEDGESVILLE, W.VA. - Organizers of the 29th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, sponsored by the WVU Medicine University Healthcare Foundation, are calling Monday’s event a huge success as the annual golf fund raiser netted $66,000 to purchase two powerlift stretchers for WVU Medicine’s ambulance service and telemedicine equipment for use at the hospitals.

Co-chairs Dan Sytsma and Brian Romine reported that 238 golfers played in the annual golf classic held at The Woods in Hedgesville. The winning team of Steve Mohr, Mark Wilson, Craig Meadows, and Sam Merandi shot a 48.1 to earn the overall first place finish.

“We thank all of our supporters who year after year make our golf fundraiser a huge success as one of the premier golf events in the region,” Teresa McCabe, vice president marketing and development for University Healthcare, said. 

To date, nearly $1.4 million has been raised from the University Healthcare golf tournaments to benefit the two hospitals.  

According to McCabe, the golf classic was established in 1988 as a fund- and friend-raiser for the Gateway Foundation in support of City Hospital. Since that time, the tournament has grown along with the health system and now supports both WVU Medicine University Healthcare hospitals, Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.               

The Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic is held annually on the first Monday in June. Next year’s event will be held on June 5 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. For more information, call the University Healthcare Foundation at 304-264-1223.
